Anyone else here an avid collector of really old models?

I know they don't have the best sculpts, especially compared to the digitally-sculpted ones GW is putting out lately, but they have a charm from the old days that the newer models just don't capture as well.

Avid collector is a bit of a stretch. I am however an older then dirt packrat, so still have tons of them in my collection.

And I love the dusty old guys.

I know exactly how you feel. I recently sold about half my Tyranids and am using the moneys to rebuild the army with retro Nids.

I know I'm losing access to the newer models (unless I go Armorcast). The older models are just unique and interesting and have character. I love the old 3rd Ed. Hive Tyrant and smiley Fex.

For what its worth the army is also far more convenient to transport. Nidzilla no longer requires a dozen squirrel-sized models!

My advice is to scour eBay regularly. Lots of really good deals on older models.

I have a local shop that sells second hand models. They pop up from time to time and, because of how old they are, they also go for cheap! (I got Old One Eye, the original metal one, for 15 bucks)

I'm actually missing a Grinfex for my 3rd ed nid army. Aside from that I have all the other models.

My current project is a 2nd Ed Blood Angels army vs a 2nd ed Black Legion Army, but I'm contemplating taking the terminators out of the BAs and making them a Deathwing army. depends on whether or not I can get more terminators down the road.

All of my Eldar Aspects are 2nd edition metals, bought purposely off Ebay to work around "Fossilized Shaving Cream priced like Gold", aka Finecast. Also, as I have been with 40K for enough time, my armies contain models all the way back to a squad of Rogue Trader tacticals and one of Assault marines.

As cool as some of the new models are (like the Space Hulk termis), I love me some old models.

I almost exclusively use 3rd Edition Tyranids. Only the modern bugs are the new sets. Dakkafex, Venomthrope, Mawloc, yada yada. Even my main Warlord Flyrant is now a 3rd Edition Forge World model. My Tyranid Prime is going to be (when I build it) a 2nd Edition model just cause I own it now.

Actually, my FLGS fuels my habit. They got the 3rd Edition Nid Battleforce and about 15 various metal bugs brand new in their boxes. I didn't buy the starter since I still have my own from that time, but I bought most of the blister packs. I think there's a Lictor left, which I am on the fence about. I could get new ones and call the classic my Deathleaper. But, I can only do that if I have just one old one. Not that Deathleaper gets any use but ya never know.

I started in 3rd Edition with 40K, so my personal collection doesn't go way back. I have a few Gorkamorka Nobz in my Ork army, some Necromunda models in my Sisters army, and a handful of other minis from 2nd Edition scattered throughout my armies. However, I still regulalrly play three all metal armies: IG Steel Legion, Sisters of Battle, and Grey Knights from the Daemonhunters codex.

I think it's important that people keep these older minis on the tabletop to preserve some of the history and heritage of hand-sculpted minis in the hobby.

I don't know how old they are, but I have a couple of different types of metal Flesh Hounds of Khorne and a metal Juggerlord. I want to say the Juggerlord is probably from the mid to late '90s, and the hounds are either from around the same time or possibly the early 2000's. I also have a couple of old Space Marine Land Speeder Tornado kits (including metal weapons) which I know are from 1999. They look just like the modern ones, though.

I have five of the sabertooth cat ones, and nine others that appear to be three slightly different basic designs. They don't have any frills, but to me they aren't super skinny or anything. There are some that have scaly-looking skin, some that have short spikes on them, and some that do look kind of skinny I guess.

The cat ones are from 2000. You seem to have the ones that came before them (probably missing the frills as they were a separate piece) which are from the early 90's IIRC.

In a lot of cases, I prefer the look of the older models to the newer covered-in-skulls crap.

My high elf army has a vast majority of its figures from between 1990 and 1995. Metals, characterful and ranked up nicely - and admittedly, bought for a song because the former owner preferred the newer monoposed IoB stuff.

Still need Escher Leader 2 to finish my Escher collection tho, but the price it goes for is making me cringe...

I really like the weight and feel of metal models. Love my metal Thousand Sons sorcerer, Kharn the Betrayer, Obliterators, and Zoanthropes. They just feel sturdier. I don't go out of my way to get them though, but if they're an option I'll grab em.

While i like a few medal models in my army, I mostly hate metal. Especially multi part models. What GW has made today has far more customization, is lighter and more durable. Most metal models are static, hard to convert and paint doesn't translate as well.

I like the weight of metal models too, but not when I have to lug my army case over half a mile to my FLGS (I don't have a car)! Glad I don't have too many metal models! On the TT, I definitely like the heft of metal miniatures. Some of the Finecast ones feel like they will break in my hand.

since I built my army mostly in the days of metal, all my elder aspects and wraith constructs are metal. I actually like the new wraithlords a lot better, but hate to spend money to replace them. I have a fair load of Harlequins still that I never did anything with, I wanted field them but hated painting them. by the time an official list came out I was already on the downhill slide out of the game. so I have a stack of old unpainted Harlequins, now that I am back l am torn what to do with them. I want to field harlequins, always liked the little clowns. But, I like the new harlequin models a lot more than the old ones in most cases ( a few exceptions) and they would be way easier to paint on. So, sell the old ones and buy new ones or keep em and save the money is my dilemma right now.

I see nothing wrong with my post. I Just got an old school metal tech marine who has a grant total of one option, what left arm do I want to give him, otherwise he's a one piece model that can only be changed via hacking him with a real saw and using a lot of green stuff. I also have the old metal killa kanz, which are a pain to transport and look like crap compared to the new ones. I much prefer cross compatible plastic kits like all the marines or guards to solid hunks of metal that i need an actual tool kit to change anything about

Right there with ya. Over 100 metal Warriors in mine, with metal Immortals and Destroyers galore. Even converted some warriors into Deathmarks and immortals into Lychguard.

Well, for starters, metal and resin still hold far more detail than current plastics. Plastics still have difficulty with deep undercuts. Have you also noticed that some of these new-fangled plastics are pretty hard to pose, too? The more GW uses CAD to design its minis, the less customization becomes possible. Have you see some of the AoS plastics? Monopose. Chunky. As for the comment that "paint doesn't translate as well," I'm not entirely sure what that comment means. My metal minis take paint just as well as plastics, and when sealed properly, are just as durable.

In closing, some things are great in plastic: tactical marines, wraithknights, chimeras, a long list of stuff. For characters, I still believe metal is king. GW's plastic technology is great, but they threw the baby out with the bathwater when they moved from metal to FineCast and later plastic clampacks: less detail, twice the price, and STILL monopose.

Admittedly, I use my metal Immortals as Pyrrean Eternals these days, and my metal Warriors as Immortals... my metal Destroyers actually get fielded as Tomb Blades, because those guys as jump infantry? No. Just no.

I used to check my FLGS where I first got into WH40k to see if they had any OOP Sisters of Battle models.

But their 40k selection's been shrinking, and now they don't have any racks for blister packs, just a shelving area for box kits and a place to hold Codices.

And do I qualify as an avid collector of old 40k minis if my favorite army in looks was sculpted before I graduated from elementary school?

I have older models in my collection as I started playing a long time ago, but generally prefer the newer sculpts for many kits.

The one thing I have been collecting recently is the old card terrain that was released in 2nd edition. These are really characterful pieces and still great to fight over. I like them in theory, I had to sell alot of my collection a couple of years ago and most rt/2nd ed/necromunda etc went, so I like them for nostalgia value. However, the reality of trying to paint wonky eyes and big noses often makes me appreciate the quality of new sculpts even more.

Wow, that's an awesome collection! Do you run them as IG? I wish I had picked up some Arbites earlier in my hobby career. Building an Arbites army from scratch now would be too cost prohibitive

Yup I run them as IG veterans with shotguns and carapace armour and add in grenade launchers and flamers. The cyber-mastiffs count as orgyns and the techpriest counts as a normal Priest (since the dogs are mechanical I thought it fitting). The guy with the fist and strom bolter is my counts as Yarrik and the the 2 shield guys next to him are priests. The last guy with the maul on his shoulder is a primaris pysker aka Psi detective. The Cadins are my sapper squad and they are just vets with the demolitions doctrine armed with meltaguns. The rouge trader maul guys are Inq crusaders and the guy leading them counts as a inquisitor. I have some shields made for them and I hope to add them on soon. Finally it's just normal Leman Russ Exterminators (the street sweepers )chimeras and scout sentinels with autocannons and HKs lead by a single armoured sentinel with a lascannon.

I bought all of this piece by piece through ebay during 5th. It was expensive and time consuming. The shipping was the worst as many times I would be buying them 2-3 at a time.

Nice. Banshees so old they still have laspistols.

I have a bunch of those old girls I used for a WHFB project. Not bad sculpts, considering how old they are. A lot of the aspect warriors have held up well.

In RT, Robots were taken in maniples (units) of 4 (of the same) robots with an adeptus mechanicus overseer.

You could change certain weapons and upgrades on the robots like a normal squad.

In the expanded rules in WD (and the Compendium), yes.

In the core 1st edition rulebook, you simply had to write down what you wanted the robot to do a number of turns in advance; the lower the robot's Intelligence score, the more turns in advance you had to write.

I'd forgotten about all of that. I've dug out the old RT Compendium and below is a sample robot program (I don't think I'm upsetting GW by posting this!).

I've got tons of original plastic Beakies and also the metal figures that were issued at the same time. I used to have some of the original plastic and metal Imperial Army figures, but I think they have nearly all disappeared from my "collection". (By which I mean various boxes and tubs of old stuff either in the cellar or the attic.)

I agree, there's something about the older models that i'm attracted to, and more than just nostalgia.

Especially the metal ones, something so much cooler about the old metal Bjorn the Fellhanded compared the excellent but not as interesting modern plastic model.

And I agree that the first Eldar aspect warriors were the best!

Yes, the original rules in the rulebook aren't as complex. Also, each square in the program cost points, so the more flexible you wanted your robot to be, the more it cost.

I think it's because the old models were hand sculpted and/or made from plasticard. Moreover, they were less "cartoony" and more realistic. Take the old metal Zoanthrope and the new plastic one. The two are pretty clearly intended to be two iterations on the same basic concept design, but the old metal zoanthrope had a much more squishy and defined brain matter, with stressed and stretched skin over that gray matter as well as organic, flowing veins around it's head. The new zoanthrope instead has a chiseled chin and jaw, and the representation of it's brain is more like a sphere with some grooves carved into it. It's stylized, but no longer realistic. Another good example is the new Grey Seer. The fur on it look more like cartoon triangle depictions than actual fluffy fur.
