CAN anyone with understanding of common law help with an important assignment?

I have a huge law assignment due for tomorrow and its the biggest load of bs every. The assignment is a case study of Galashiels Gas Co., Ld. Appellants; v. O'Donnell or Millar Respondent [1949] AC 275, (1949) SC (HL) 31. There are 6 questions to answer leading to 100 marks, with a required 40% overall to pass and need 30% in each question to pass as well. This assignment is worth 75% of my semester grade and the lecturers haven't explained how to do any of it, and have all cleared off until the 18th January for their holidays and won't answer questions. If anyone can answer a few questions (not the actual questions, but questions about the questions).

Firstly, if anyone is familiar with WESTLAW UK, can anyone explain how to find or cite paragraph number? There are little numbers like " *277 " which are page numbers but no indication as to paragraph number.

Secondly, what is meant by a legal dispute and how would you describe it academically?

Thirdly, if anyone has paypal and can complete a bunch of questions on the case multiple different ways I know 65 people who would pay top dollar, if you can get it complete by 21:00 GMT tomorrow (5th January)

Scratching that last part, can anyone explain what the first two parts are? Please?

I feel I should mention for pride's sake that Law is not my degree major, I'm a Journalism/Creative Writing student but needed law and politics to make up my credits for first year and plan to drop law in my second year.

From what I remember of west law, you have to manually count them. But it is the same for many of them. BUT, the page is often enough. If they are using standard Harvard citation rules, then the paragraph isn't life or death, as long as your references are identical, you won't lose any marks for it. I was never much good at the academia side, but a legal dispute is more or less an arguement over litigation.

I did a law module in my business degree in the mid-2000s, so my knowledge is a bit rusty. I didn't use Westlaw, but from what I remember of citations you don't need to put a paragraph number anyway. (There are various standard formats for giving citations.)

As for a legal dispute, it could be as Welshoppo says a dispute in court about legal technicalities, or it could be the situation where two parties have a disagreement that cannot be resolved by normal non-legal processes and therefore ends up in court (or industrial tribunal, or legally binding arbitration.) You see these sorts of cases every day on Judge RInder, and it really is quite a good education about the way the law operates in these kind of disputes.

Common law is the law that is made by judgements in individual cases providing rules or guidance for subsequent cases. There are many examples in English and US law, which you have to learn for your exams. I still remember some of them over 10 years later; Salomon vs Salomon, 1896, which is to do with company law.

Anyway, good luck! You seem to have left it a bit late, but perhaps circumstances were beyond your control. Maybe you could try for an extension.

Thanks for the help you guys, really saved my backside here. With regards to the paragraphs, thanks for clarifying, the whole group was confused because our lecturer flew off the handle and said we'd all fail because we didn't know to cite paragraphs properly or some stuff, but if, as a general rule, they're not needed I think we'd be fine then.

I know how law lecturers can be, they forget that us students operate on an entirely different plain of thought.

It only really matters if you are quoting from bailli, because there are no page numbers so you have to use paragraphs.
