Secondly, what is meant by a legal dispute and how would you describe it academically?

As for a legal dispute, it could be as Welshoppo says a dispute in court about legal technicalities, or it could be the situation where two parties have a disagreement that cannot be resolved by normal non-legal processes and therefore ends up in court (or industrial tribunal, or legally binding arbitration.) You see these sorts of cases every day on Judge RInder, and it really is quite a good education about the way the law operates in these kind of disputes.

Common law is the law that is made by judgements in individual cases providing rules or guidance for subsequent cases. There are many examples in English and US law, which you have to learn for your exams. I still remember some of them over 10 years later; Salomon vs Salomon, 1896, which is to do with company law.
