The Evolution of 40k- transport vehicles now up

Hi everyone,

I started playing 40k in third edition and have played for every edition of the game so far. I had a bit of time over the Christmas break and was looking through some of the old rulebooks and issues of White Dwarf and it got me reminiscing about how the game has evolved over the years.

I decided to write up a couple of blog posts on how the game has changed over the years. The first was on the evolution of formations in the game, from the earliest examples in the first apocalypse book to the situation we are now in with massed formations for many of the available armies. You can find the article here http://standwargaming.blogspot.co.uk/2015/12/formation-ing-opinion-evolution-of.html

The second takes a look at how the rules for vehicles have evolved from the complex machines of 2nd edition to the current set of rules and the trends that have been occurring over the years. You can find the article here, http://standwargaming.blogspot.co.uk/2016/01/armoured-fury-evolution-of-vehicles-in.html

I plan to look at how the rules for transport vehicles have changed over the previous editions of 40k, then maybe take a look at how Orks and Space Marines have evolved.

What about the rest of you- Any aspect of the game that you would be interested in reading about? Are you happy with the way the game has been evolving over the previous editions? Do you still play some of the older editions on a regular basis?

I have now posted the article on transport vehicles http://standwargaming.blogspot.co.uk/2016/01/all-aboard-evolution-of-transport.html

Re:The Evolution of 40k

I liked the addition of Hull points in 6th, made it easier to defeat vehicles instead of just waiting to roll a 5 or 6. One-shot hits to blow it up always made the game fun IMO, but most of the good weapons are AP2 or AP1. I wouldn't classify the evolution of the game as good or bad, there are parts from some I like. One thing I do miss is being able to loot vehicles with the Orks, not "looted wagon" but have the stats and guns of said looted vehicle with Ork BS.

Re:The Evolution of 40k

Yeah, Orks were a lot of fun in 3rd edition. Not only could they loot the actual vehicles, but the lootas could steal the weapons from a selected squad. Scouts were a favourite to loot from- Orks with sniper rifles!

The Evolution of 40k

I'd like to read about the transition from grim-dark to noble-bright in the fluff.

3rd edition was the edition where everything is breaking down, or rare. Ad Mech barely understood technology, and prayed to machines till it worked or broke down. Mankind is besieged by enemies everywhere, and its 1 minute to midnight on every front. Enemies are strong and on the verge of winning.

These day, you get noble-bright heroes travelling through the warp, with flying land raiders, ad-mech super geniuses, innovation, progression, etc. All stories end on a positive note. Tyranids are a minor nuisance that has to be exterminated every few years. CSM are mustache twirlers. Eldar are noble bright clowns in bright colours, saving the world again.

Next part of my series on the evolution of 40k is now up. This time I look at how the rules for transport vehicles have evolved from 3rd edition to the current rules. http://standwargaming.blogspot.co.uk/2016/01/all-aboard-evolution-of-transport.html

AFAIK, reading the 7th BRB, No Escape has no effect on regular transports.

It only affects BUILDINGS with a fire point or Open Topped Vehicles. So Boyz in a Trukk or some Guardsmen in a bunker would be affected, but not Marines in a Rhino.

Otherwise, I enjoyed the article. I didn't play before mid-5th, so it was interesting to read about how it was in earlier editions.

You are quite correct about not affecting a normal vehicle! I missed the word "building" when I was reading it, thanks for the correction.
