However, he is still an unknown, thin-blood amongst veterans of the old war, with only a twice traitor corsair, a couple terminators (albeit one is Malak, a celebrated champion) , and a raptor aspiring champ as his only support.

Now both Talos and his unholyness, Lord Marmaduke from the WB, climbed to command their own warbands easily enough. But both were established members of their band, and both were respected authority figures in that warband,and I haven't read any stories where another potential champion rises to become a Lord, never mind where said champion didn't have these perks behind them.

Decimus isn't part of any hierarchy to climb and doesn't have any real reputation to throw around, but we are lead to believe that he will fulfill his prophecy.

So, how do you thing would this outsider could take a warband from an established lord?

As for Decimus? Simply predict the Lord's death with prophecy, then step into command when he gets nailed as Decimus predicted.
