Been almost 20 years since last game. Decided to start an new army, could use a little help deciding

So yeah, after a long hiatus I'm coming back. So I know the armies I'm going to decide between. I've looked at their rules, I've loosely planned out army lists, and both armies have lore/fluff that really nabs me. Those two armies, for one, are both IG but play very differently for each other. They're the Death Korps of Krieg, and the Elysian Drop Troops (emphasis on Detachment 99). Now I'm sure there will be people who won't like the pure Forge World Armies, but I dig these two regiments , and if I am going to return to this immense and intriguing universe, it is going to be with these armies. Or rather one of them. I do work on a fishing boat. So I don't hurt for cash, but they are indeed expincive little dudes to be sure. Now, I understand how the armies work, or at least how they're geared to work, but I haven't played in two decades. These two armies didn't even exist for one. I'm out of the loop, but I'm a research nut and would really like y'alls opinion. I guess I'd like to know how competitive would these armies be in a pure form, dice willing. Comments, thoughts, or views from experience in fielding them or going up against them. Lists that preform particularly well and ones that don't. I pretty much would like to know if they are more than a cool model that l, to me, looks good on paper. I mostly want to just spend time building and painting an army, but will field it eventually. Any thing to tell, I'll hear. And a thanks upfront, I appreciate any advice on the matter.

If I'm inclined to throw in my lot with Krieg then I would want to collect both lists evetually. And I am looking for a pure build, no allies, or equipment that doesn't belong.
Been almost 20 years since last game. Decided to start an new army, could use a little help deciding

Between the two, I would say that for the most part that DKoK are more competitive than Elysian Drop Troops. This is mainly because flyer-spam/mass deep strike armies are incredibly hard to pull off in Maelstrom Games since you're on the backfoot to begin with regarding holding objectives even with perks like combat drop, which again requires you to invest in things like a comms relay to make sure your alpha strike units come in on time.

Artillery is very strong this edition and with the DKoK being able to spam a surprising amount they have an edge over the Drop Troops. Being T7 outside of CC goes a long way of mitigating the squishiness inherent in a guard army. The other issue is that Valkyries are not exactly the greatest flyer or transport in the game right now, which is kinda needed in an Elysian army to push the mobility aspect of your army.

It also depends on the kind of playstyle you're interested in, since one depends on alpha-strike and special weapon spam (at least for the D99 detachment) or a bubble-wrapped artillery army. Both have cool models so that's really up to you.

I ran a 5 game narrative campaign using D99 from the Anphelion IA books

http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/628950.page

They do have a fun game mechanic and you can put together some interesting builds. Ultimately however they get a bit boring. Their FoC choices are limited and unless you have several Valks they are very hard to play. The DS rule is nice but not al that reliable.
Some FoC choices are subpar (could never get the cyclops to do much and the tauros dont pack enough dmg output for their AV value).
Their elites section is quite interesting being able to tailor a squad for sniping, tank hunting, flamer duty etc and the Vulture always immense fun but Im not sure they have the longevity if you are going to spend that much on them.
By the end of the campaign I was sort of happy to go back to regular IG and field some artillary or tanks or even rough riders!!
My two cents anywho.

Also, just because IG aren't the flavor of the month right now doesn't mean they won't be if and when their new book eventually drops. Just about every army out there has had significant fluctuations in their ability over the years. Heck, IG are a prime example of going from top of the line to middle of the pack in relatively short order.

If I were you OP, I would go with DKoK purely from a style standpoint. I have always loved the models and lore since they came into the limelight during the 3rd Armageddon War, and have personally thought they would be a fun army to put together. The FW DKoK models are some of my favorite in all of GW's range. Something awesome and sinister about all those gas masks makes them far more compelling to me than the drop troops (which are also fine models). Good luck with whatever you decide. You should blog about it and post pics here as it comes along.

The most competitive list would probably be a fusion of the two. A mountain of men and guns sitting in the back shooting the enemy while the paratroopers grab objectives and provide mobility to the list.

If you don't want to split the baby, I would go with the Elysians. You won't have to paint a mountain of models since it's more of an elite army. The deep striking allows for movement during the game, so it would not be as static.

Wow thanks for all the attention guys haha. I believe I'll amass a D-99 army. I'll certainly start a thread on my progress. After I get a good force started and painted I may ally with Inquisition and/or some Cadians for armor and to reinforce the fact that D-99 are spec-ops. It boils down to the point that I dig the specialized aspect of the Elysians. The Kriegers are awesome, don't get me wrong, but they seem to be fairly run of the mill. Other than their ability to hold the line do to balls of steel the don't really seem to.. destictive. Also, hordes of dead men don't seem to inspire much passion. I want to feel like my army is fighting for their brothers right next to them. Not just dudes who don't give a damn about anything but dying for the Emporer. It may be a while before I get any pics up, but I will start a blog/thread of my progress. Any ways thanks alot for all the help guys
