There and back again, a guardsman's tale

So when I was first introduced to 40k, guard was the first army to catch my eye. This was way back in 4th edition. Since then, I have migrated away from them and have played marines, tau, and now play Carcharodons. Having about 3000 points worth of those, and a good grasp on the army, I would like to start piecing together a guard army again and find myself looking at them more often. I like the idea of running something different than my assault based marines, and am leaning towards an artillery heavy army, sitting in the back and pummeling the enemy into oblivion. I also enjoy the idea of basing the army around fluff and so my question is what guard artillery regiments are out there? I don't want something I can throw together overnight, and I'm not afraid of a good project. Thoughts? Units/formations I should/shouldn't run? I'm just looking for some ideas here so I can get the creativity rolling. Thanks!

Absolutely. Death Korps of Krieg are an artillery guard army modeled after WWI. They are forgeworld...so, I am not sure if that is a problem for you or not.

As beautiful as those models are, my wallet would hate me a considerable amount if I purchased a forgeworld army. But I do like the idea behind them. Bombard the enemy in a war of attrition. Are there other regiments that are similar, but could be converted from the cadian models/catachan models as a base?

If you're into artillery, the guard is the place to be.

From a price perspective, if you're keen to save some money and aren't a total model purist, I'd go with Wargames factory's WWII infantry. I use them as IG conscripts and they look great. The Eisenkern storm troopers and heavy weapons teams are a more 40k look that are also well priced.

Game wise, the key artillery units are wyverns and manticores. Currently, infantry mortars are overpriced and under effective IMO. Take two command squads, give them camo cloaks and masters of ordnance. Then kit out a few veterans with camo cloaks and snare mines to anchor your flanks, and form a line with tons of lascannon or autocannon toting guardsmen. Keep some heavy flamer sentinels or a hellhound in reserve to counter attack when the enemy comes near. Now you've got a mass of entrenched bodies surrounding a heavy hitting artillery corps. Let the fun begin.
