Heralds of Ruin Kill Team, Necrons vs. Vostroyans & Space Wolves

Games 1-3 can be found here.

GAME 4: CUSTOM, NECRON 250 vs R’s VOSTROYAN SCION 200

FORCES: The Necron force consisted of a Lord (tomb blade, warscythe, and just about every other possible upgrade), two Canoptek Wraiths (whipcoils), and a single Warrior.

The Vostroyan Firstborn army consisted of a Tempestor Prime and a bunch of Scions with grav-chutes.

PRE-BATTLE: This custom game was a six turn battle over five objectives in a dense urban area. No other special rules were in play.

The Necrons deployed on the north end of the battlefield. Their assault forces were front and center. A defensive turret was placed on a tower in the northeast corner. The lone Warrior hid in a ruin on the northwest side, hoping to be ignored until he could pull a last-second objective grab.

BATTLE: Knowing his forces outmatched the Vostroyans, the Lord offered to spare the rank and file if the Tempestor Prime would meet him in single combat. The Prime scoffed at this, shouting that his men would fight to the bitter end.

The Lord and his Wraiths raced forward and fanned out. The Tempestor Prime and his bodyguard began to scale the ruined wall in hopes of avoiding the oncoming horrors.

As the pair ascended, the Necron turret cut down the bodyguard and scored a wound on the Prime, who escaped to the highest level. The Necron Lord was infuriated that his quarry had escaped beyond the reach of his warscythe, and he cut him down with his gauss blaster.

The Scions in the southwest seized the fortress, but their twin-linked hotshot lasfire did nothing to deter the oncoming Wraith. The Wraith eliminated the men at the objective on the fortress landing pad before moving to ground level to hunt for a straggler. The Wraith’s search was in vain, for this straggler had managed to sneak around it and up to the landing pad objective. Upon seeing the gruesome remains of his comrades scattered about the landing pad, the guardsman’s heart was consumed with fury. The enraged guardsman leapt off the landing pad onto the back of the monstrous robot. This unexpected attack confounded the Wraith for a turn, but it was not enough to save this temerarious Scion from evisceration.

Vostroyan reinforcements began to grav-chute in near the central and northern objectives, and the Lord and Wraiths doubled back to face them. Once these drop troops witnessed their plasmagunner being torn to shreds by the relentless constructs, they voluntarily routed, abandoning the city to the Necrons.

AFTERMATH: Although most of the fallen Scions were recovered and saved, the battle proved to be an infamous failure for the Vostroyans, cancelling out the underdog bonus.

Canoptek constructs swarmed the city, breaking down the abandoned Imperial structures and converting them into new assets for the Necron war machine. The Necrons now have a Main Base.

GAME 5: CUSTOM, NECRON 300 vs EMPTYEDEN’s UNDEFEATED SPACE WOLVES 300

FORCES: My force consists of a Lord (tomb blade, warscythe, and just about every other possible upgrade), three Canoptek Wraiths (whipcoils), and a single Immortal.

Emptyeden’s force is comprised of three Thunderwolf Cavalrymen, some Blood Claws, some Grey Hunters, and a bare-bones leader.

PRE-BATTLE: This is a custom six turn fight over five objectives with no other special rules.

I deploy a defensive turret atop a ruin in the southwest corner, my assault force in the southeast corner, and my Immortal behind some ruins where I hope he’ll be ignored until the time comes for a late-game objective grab.

Emptyeden deploys his turret atop a ruin in the northeast corner, his leader out of line of sight inside a ruin just to the west of the turret, and the rest of his force on the ground split up into small groups.

BATTLE: My assault units race out to the cover of some woods in the center of the board, just out of Thunderwolf charge range.

The Wolves send two Thunderwolves sweeping around the west side and one up the east side. Infantry forces cautiously advance favoring the east side, although one is held back for late-game objective grabs. The defense turret wounds one of my Wraiths.

The rest of the Space Wolves (save the lone hidden objective-grabber and a Thunderwolf who was gunned down by my turret en route) make their way to this brawl and pile in.

Spoiler:

The battle is long and bloody. When the dust clears, the Wolves are beaten, my wounded Lord is positioned to take an objective outside the Wolf DZ, and my last surviving Wraith is positioned to charge the Wolves’ hidden objective-grabber. Before the Wraith can pounce, the Wolves’ automated defense turret fires down into its back, destroying it.

Spoiler:

The Wolves’ last marine runs out unmolested to seize an objective. My Immortal does the same, but is cut down by the Wolves’ defense turret. Each team’s lone survivor holds one objective. The game ends in a tie.

AFTERMATH: Casualties are light on both sides.

LESSONS LEARNED: The Heralds of Ruin rules are unkind to Scions. This took me by surprise because Guard teams are decent under GW’s official Kill Team rule set.

Wraiths may be able to tie up Chaos bikers and marines indefinitely, but they crumble to Thunderwolf Cavalry’s outrageous number of attacks.

Automated defense turrets are an auto-take. Three twin-linked 36” S5 AP4 shots from a T7 2W 3+ model that doesn’t eat into your fieldable point limit for only 5 RP is a steal. In game 5 our two turrets killed over 100 points worth of enemies.

If anyone has any suggestions for ways to improve these reports, I’m all ears. Thanks.

Games 7 - 9 can be found here.

edits: Added links to the campaign's previous and later games.

Heralds of Ruin Kill Team, Necrons vs. Vostroyans & Space Wolves

I tried playing Scions in the Heralds of Ruin Kill Team, it is doable but has really bad match ups. I had always wanted to make an all Scout Marine army, so I tried a Scout Squad in a campaign. Give them a try, I struggled the first few games. But, due to how inexpensive your guys are, you can weather losses far better, and once your guys get a few upgrades... Sweet.

I ended up having to retire them early because the games were so one sided. I can only imagine how Scions would do in a campaign, because your guys are even less expensive (mine all had Camo cloaks minus the three bikers).
