Maurice White was the founder and a lead vocalist of Earth Wind & Fire, one of the most influential R&B/funk/soul performers. In fact it is hard to pigeonhole their genre as they straddled several often at the same time. They were trendsetters in the music industry.
Earth Wind and Fire are still recording, but Maurice White retired some years ago and has long been suffering from Parkinsons.
Maurice White helped inspired whole generations in music, Earth Wind & Fire's influence was seminal for the funk and modern soul genres.

More than this he was by all accounts a lovely man.
