New Chapter Background Writing

So I've posted a sample list for judgement awhile back which I'm currently painting, reading some of the novels atm and I thought I'd try and jot down in dot points how my marines from 5th edition somehow turn into my new marine army. Below is what I got, any ideas or thoughts or anything that seems contradictory let me know, I'd like opinions For gamer's I've also picked out a few high level rules that the Chapter must follow to keep with the fluff also.

Revolution Marines:
- Established during the 35m, chapter was designated as a standing force to operate in outlying imperial outposts. Specifically aiding in resource collecting operations to supply loyalist forces forge worlds with much needed fuels.
- Gene seed derived directly from Ultramarines stock, the chapter was dedicated to codex compliance.
- Due to their need to constantly travel between systems, the chapter developed oversized battle barges to act as flagships, these were named Class 0 Leviathan’s. A total of 4 were created, 1 was destroyed only moments into its first voyage, its superstructure collapsing under its own weight. All following productions incorporated extensive supporting exoskeletons to avoid this issue.
- The chapter was considered fleet based however operated an orbital forge facility above a small planet in an outer territory, exact location is now lost, the systems multiple suns provided natural solar energy for the station making it less dependent on the chapters supply operation.
- The chapter was involved in many conflicts, despatching battle companies to aid loyalists in adjacent systems to where they resource collecting activities were occurring. 1st company veterans were rarely despatched in the interests of protecting the mining operations first and foremost.
- Chapter was considered lost after a warp accident in 36m, multiple transport barges exiting the warp became superheated and ignited mid jump. Only wreckage of some craft was discovered close to the Raven Guard’s homeworld of Deliverance centuries later. The only surviving companies were the 8th and 10th which, these were disbanded and assimilated into the ranks of the Ultramarines. Leviathan 2 was lost to this accident, 3 and 4 were docked with their orbital facility with the intention of repurposing them at a time however this location has since been lost.

Abyssal Crusade:
- During the crusade in 37m, select members of the Vorpal Swords chapter recounted during their debriefing seeing large destroyed ships in close orbit with some of the worlds within the warp. Many of these appeared to be of Imperial origin from several different era’s. Almost all that were debriefed however describe on particular craft as being much larger than normal battle barges but it bore no distinctive marks and had been significantly damaged. Scribes noted the possibility that this had infact been the Leviathan 2’s wreckage but was unable to confirm.

Re-emergence:
- In 41m, Raven Guard companies in close proximity to Deliverance were called to aid their homeworld after a large warp storm erupted in the same system, fearing it may prelude a incursion of Chaos marines.
- Wreckage matching the description the Vorpal Swords gave is ejected from the warp storm before it closes, Raven guard boarding forces investigate the wreckage and identify it as the Leviathan 2 from its remaining intact interior.
- To their horror, the boarding party find a total of 312 marines in cryo stasis, snap frozen inside their suits by the ship’s AI which in response to the igniting transport barges in the warp storm in which they were lost deemed an appropriate response to save the marines lives. By sealing the the innermost chambers and flooding the rooms with liquid hydrogen (usually used as fuel) it had successfully frozen the marines before they were destroyed.
- Apothecaries are called in from multiple chapters to attempt to resurrect the marines, of the original 312, 83 survived and were deemed suitable for combat.
- Among the survivors were two members of their 1st companies command squad, Tobias Green, an experienced assault specialist and Dominic Fox an expert marksman, they are reinstated as the commanders of the survivors. Several of Raven Guard’s shadow captains take it upon themselves to outfit and re-train the revived marines. A new name is chosen to show that these marines that came out of the storm are not the same any more.

The Iron Rangers:
- A by product of their ordeal, the Iron Rangers have over sensitive eyesight as a defect in their geneseed. Preferring to instead operate in darker conditions. Secondly this sensitivity has lead them to become skilled at targeting distant opponents with bolter fire.
- Their affinity with the warp has made them respect and admire naturally occurring storms, the shade they provide assists with their sight and concealing their infantries movements.
- The Leviathan 2’s AI which saved them is retained by Iron Rangers, Inquisitors request to take the AI for study is denied by Tobias, this causes the some outrage by the Inquisition and threatens excommunication of the Rangers however this remains unresolved tension between the two groups to date.
- Retrofitting a light supply cruiser named the Hades, the Iron Rangers are today a fleet based chapter in search of their original home world and lost Forge station. Inspired by the Raven Guard’s actions, the Rangers following in their teachings by responding to lost worlds calls for help against those that oppose the imperium. All the while combing the galaxy for their true home.

Self Imposed Guidelines for the fluff
- Iron Rangers use Raptors Chapter Tactics
- Tobias Green can be represented by a model similar to Shadow Captain Shrike
- Dominic Fox can be represented by a model similar to Lias Issodon
- Iron Rangers forces cannot be allied with armies containing an Inquisitor or Grey Knights

New Chapter Background Writing

Okay, here is some of my thoughts:

There is no gravity in space... How does a spaceship collapse under its own weight? That is only possible I think if you'd land it on a planet or something (which 40k spaceships never do) or if it is so large it has a gravity field of its own (in which case it would be way too large for a Space Marine chapter too have).

Also, ship's AI? That is heresy! The most severe tech-heresy inmaginable! Purge the abominable intelligence! If a Space Marine Chapter had a spaceship with actual AI, you can bet that the AdMech would do everything to wipe it out as fast as possible.

Furthermore, those names. Tobias Green? That is no proper name for an Angel of Death in the grim darkness of the year 40000! I would reccommend using no 21st century names, and instead going with something more grimdark. Otherwise it is out of tone with the rest of the universe.

And why can't your chapter ally with Inquisition forces? I don't think you explained that.

New Chapter Background Writing

As a general note, I'd refrain from using established Chapters with "your guys." Ultramarine geneseed is no issue, but Raven Guard and Vorpal Swords aren't a good idea. The names need some Grimdark-ifying. The main stuff is absolutely fine, but there are some alterations you'd probably want to make

OCaermada wrote:

- Established during the 35m, chapter was designated as a standing force to operate in outlying imperial outposts. No, a Chapter would not get super special giant battle barges "due to constantly needing to jump through systems". Strike Cruisers and Battle Barges are ALREADY expected to spend DECADES in the void itself, traveling across the entire galaxy to the next fight for incredibly long campaigns (to the point that the of some ships spent near the homeworld can be measured in single-digit years). Of course, battle barges aren't standard, and a Chapter from the Second Founding can conceivably have Imperial Battleships in its numbers- but a later founding chapter will almost always just have standardized battle barges. They certainly won't have a WHOLE NEW SHIP CLASS made JUST for them. And they sure as hell won't be carrying fuel around. The Adeptus Mechanicus already has feth-huge fleets doing that.

- The chapter was involved in many conflicts, despatching battle companies to aid loyalists in adjacent systems to where they resource collecting activities were occurring. 1st company veterans were rarely despatched in the interests of protecting the mining operations first and foremost.

What the hell is your obsession with this mining business? No Astartes Chapter will have anything to do with this. They exist purely for war and putting the enemies of mankind to the sword. Not managing LOGISTICS. That's the Munitorium's job.

- To their horror, the boarding party find a total of 312 marines in cryo stasis, snap frozen inside their suits

Fething what. I have never heard of Astartes using cryonics tech ever outside of it being weaponized by the Space Wolves.

by the ship’s AI

Tech Heresy? Tech Heresy. Why the feth is a First Founding Chapter, not only coming across from multiple deployments across the galaxy, coming to your snowflakes just to train them? Astartes don't forget even if turned into a popsicle, they don't need training, and the Chapter will be expected to do it themselves on their own damn time.

A new name is chosen to show that these marines that came out of the storm are not the same any more.

Why? A Chapter clings to its past with blind zealotry. If he denies the Inquisition openly instead of using subversion like the Dark Angels, he's getting straight-up krumped. Nevermind the still ridiculously snowflake nature of having a super-special ship made exclusively for your super-special chapter, or the fact that they can even get power armor when harboring Abominable Intelligence.

What is this, the A-Team?

Yeah your Chapter is absolutely ridiculous and suffers from incredible snowflake syndrome, what with the fething RAVEN GUARD apparently taking time out of the eternal war to train them. Seriously? The idea of a First Founder randomly saving, calling in all its companies, and then training some mid-founding nobodies is ridiculous. Simply ridiculous.

Iron_Captain wrote:
Okay, here is some of my thoughts:

There is no gravity in space...
Re:New Chapter Background Writing

Aw, Wyzilla, you don't have to be so mean. You make good points though, and I agree with all of them save one. Apothecaries could be pulled from elsewhere to help save an otherwise doomed Chapter. Most Chapters care enough about their brothers from other Chapters to want to prevent them from dying out. Besides, Space Marines are a very important resource, so saving them is a big deal. It happens several times in the fluff, like with the Celestial Lions receiving a temporary detachment of Black Templars to help them rebuild.
To add some more constructive criticism:
Change the special snowflake huge heretical spaceships into a Space Hulk. A Space Hulk can be huge, and would be a fitting homebase for a fleet-based Astartes Chapter.
This Space Hulk could even include an ancient xenos vessel that contains the technology to automatically put your marines in stasis and the AI. Both of those are not technologies used normally by the Imperium (AI is actually the greatest possible tech-heresy), so better to explain it as xenos technology. Of course, if the existence of the AI is found out and the Space Marines don't destroy it immediately, expect conflict with the AdMech and wider Imperium. Conflict with the AdMech is not good for a Chapter, because Space Marines depend on them in a lot of ways.
Shadow Captains of the Raven Guard are busy people, and have better things to do than to personally train a new or recovered Chapter, especially if they are not their descendants. At most, the Raven Guard would assign a few veterans to do this. But since your Chapter is descended from the Ultramarines, that duty would more likely be taken up by an Ultramarines successor. You might want to change the founding Chapter to Raven Guard to make it work better. That would also justify the Raven Guard gifting them some equipment.
