GAME 7: CUSTOM, NECRON 300 vs. R’s VOSTROYAN SCION 200

FORCES: The Necrons have a Tomb blade/warscythe Lord with just about every possible upgrade, three whipcoil Wraiths, and an Immortal. (300 points)

The Vostroyan Scion army is a Tempestor and a bunch of Scions, all with grav-chutes. (200 points)

PRE-BATTLE: In this custom mission, the Necron defenders have a 12” deployment zone containing three objective markers. The attacking force has a 24” DZ.

One Wraith is placed at each objective, and the Immortal is placed on a balcony on the south side. The defensive turret is placed atop a building on the north side. The Lord is up at the edge of the DZ, ready to charge.

The Vostroyan Scions take up defensive positions in the ruins on their side.

BATTLE: The Necrons would’ve easily butchered the Scion team, so instead the Lord challenges the Tempestor to single combat. The winner will be free to take the objectives, and the loser’s forces will be allowed to retreat without harassment. The Tempestor agrees, but only if the Lord dismounts from his jetbike, sacrificing his +1T bonus.

The Necron Lord turbo-boosts to the Scions’ front door and “dismounts.”

The Tempestor revs up his chainsword, fires up his jetpack, and leaps from the third floor of the ruin. He crash lands atop the Lord and begins swinging wildly with his chainsword. The Tempestor scores several solid blows and wounds the Lord, but is unable to slay his opponent before he falls to his foe’s warscythe.

The Tempestor’s men begin to pull out of their defensive positions.

The Lord bows to them in a salute to their honor and to the courage of their Tempestor.

AFTERMATH: The valiant Tempestor makes a full recovery.

GAME 8: CUSTOM, NECRON 300 vs J’s IMPERIAL FISTS 300

FORCES: The Necrons are fielding the same forces as Game 7 – a Lord, three Wraiths, and an Immortal.

The Imperial Fist force consists of a terminator leader with a thunder hammer and storm shield, an assault cannon terminator, a grav centurion, a plasmagunner ("Slips"), and a bunch of regular tactical marines.

PRE-BATTLE: The mission is the same as game 7 – Three objectives in the defender’s 12” DZ, attacker has a 24” DZ.

The Necron defenders deploy two Wraiths, an Immortal, and a defensive turret in a large ruin in the center of their DZ, with the turret up high and the Immortal on a balcony. The Lord is parked out in front of the central ruin on the west side. The third Wraith is behind a ruin in the southeast corner.

Imperial Fist attackers deploy the grav centurion and thunderhammer/stormshield terminator high up on a ruin on the east side. The assault cannon terminator and the rest of the marines are in the center of the board.

BATTLE: The attackers advance and unload on the Necrons, killing the Immortal and wounding the Lord and a Wraith.

The Lord and Wraiths move out into the field. The Lord engages and dispatches the assault cannon terminator, but the Wraiths can’t close with their targets before facing another withering wave of bolter and grav fire.

One Wraith is destroyed, and the terminator sergeant charges out of the ruin into the battle below.

The rest of the battle is a grind. A series of lucky rolls effectively gave the terminator sergeant Hit & Run, allowing him to disengage from the combat each round just in time for the grav centurion and the other marines to open up on the Necrons.

The Lord and Wraith eventually fall. The final Wraith is defeated in close combat by a pair of tactical marines. The Imperial Fists have tabled the Necrons.

AFTERMATH: The Immortal is permanently destroyed. The Necron failure is infamous, and I lose a point of Renown. The Necrons buy an Immortal and tanglewire. This is the first time the Lord has been beaten in combat. He vows revenge.

The Imperial Fists buy a defensive turret.

GAME 9: DOOMSDAY DEVICE, NECRON 300 vs. J's IMPERIAL FIST 300

FORCES: Same as Game 8 – a Lord, three Wraiths, and an Immortal vs. a thunderhammer/stormshield terminator, an assault cannon terminator, a grav centurion, a plasmagunner, and a bunch of tactical marines.

PRE-BATTLE: The mission is Doomsday Device.

The Imperial fists deploy Snips the plasmagunner, the grav centurion, and a few tactical marines in a group on the east side near an objective. The two terminators and some more tactical marines are deployed on the west side between two objectives. The defense turret is set up on top of a ruin in the center of the DZ.

Necrons deploy one Wraith on the east side behind a ruin, an Immortal and a second Wraith in cover in a ruin near an objective, a third wraith on the west side, and the Lord in front of the ruin. The Necron defense turret is set up on top of the ruin, and tanglewire is set up outside the enemy DZ.

BATTLE: The Imperial Fists advance, taking potshots, but doing no damage. Three of the four Fist country objectives are revealed to be dummies.

The Wraiths pivot counterclockwise around the board edge. The Immortal pops out of cover and downs a tactical marine. The Lord turbo-boosts past the enemy lines, landing on top of the enemy ruin behind the defense turret. The objective on the Necrons’ side of the table is revealed to be a dummy.

The Fists send one sacrificial tactical marine (“Harvey”) on a suicide mission to the east side to unveil the eastern objective. The rest of the Fists unload on the Necron Lord, but do no damage.

The objective on the east side is revealed to be a dummy, meaning the objective near the northwest Fist group is the doomsday device.

The Necrons descend upon the Imperial Fists. Harvey is slashed to ribbons by Wraiths...

…while the Lord, remembering his humiliation in Game 7, kills Slips the plasmagunner and the grav centurion.

This assault leaves the Imperial Fists at half strength. They fail their rout check and flee the battle. Necrons win.

AFTERMATH: The Necrons, having earned their tenth point of Renown, go on a massive shopping spree.

LESSONS LEARNED: My number one weakness is target priority, followed closely by a lack of focus on the objectives as the turn clock winds down.
