Tau and Objectives

Hey,
Having played a 1v1v1 game recently (Blood Angels, Orks and Tau) I came to a bit of a realisation.
The basic way the game worked was the Tau (me) infiltrated Kroot onto the Relic. The Orks then charged the kroot claiming the relic.
The Blood Angles and Orks fought over the relic while the Tau tried to stay out of the brawl and blasted anyone who looked like getting the upper hand.
The Orks were decimated. The Blood Angles had a strong jump pack unit going however a ghoastkeel managed to grab the Relic on the final turn.

From this description you would have thought the Tau would have won and the Orks last. Well when the points were added the Orks won 7 to 6 to 6.
How did this happen? Well while the fight in the middle was taking place the an Ork truck and Kopter were racking up VP's objective hunting.

Being able to reach across the Board and keep racking up points seems to be just as important as racking up kills.

I was thinking what could a Tau player take as a small throw away squad that might be able to a push a back field unit off and objective and score points.
A back field unit is something like a 5 man marine squad with a Heavy Bolter or a unit of 10 Gaunts ect.

I would expect the unit to be under 200pts.

My thoughts are along the lines of a pathfinder unit.
191 points
6 pathfinders (3 with railrifles)
Devilfish.

Scout move followed by T1 flat out will get them there fast. 6 AP1 shots for MEQ and 12 (total) shots for lager squads. If you deploy within 3 of the objective you might be able to push them off.
Blowing the 200 point limit the grav drone might save them from the counter charge as well. Also with three "units" (pathfinders, devilfish and drones) +1 BS in hunter cadre.

I have had luck with a deepstriking duel flamer suit which is cheap and awsome against low saves but not good against MEQ.

Can you sugest somthing better?

Thanks for reading!

Tau and Objectives

Best objective grabbing unit:

A single farsight enclaves crisis suit.

Since any detachment can be a farsight enclaves detachment, you can just have a farsight enclaves combined arms detachment. Now, that single crisis suit has objective: secured.

He deep strikes in, uses his flamer to do some damage and then uses his assault move to move within 3" of the objective (or runs and then does the same if scatter was poor on deep strike).

If troops that also have objective secured are there, then you deny them from controlling it. But most of the time, you will be able to control the objective or bide your time behind some terrain.

How much does this Swiss Army knife (T4, 2W and 3+ save) cost? 28 points with the flamer. 23 points if you don't want a weapon. Or equip him with something like 2 fusion guns, or 2 air bursting fragmentation projectors...the list is endless.

What more could you ask for?

Re:Tau and Objectives

Some good suggestions and some ordinary ones.
Please think about your selection before you post.

@fatbudda319
Great suggestion. I currently don't have the models but a breacher squad I think is the best alternative choice.

@carldooley
Good luck shifting a MEQ off an objective with a small piranah squad.

@luke1705
The very imaginiative spaming of crisis suits!
Did you read the intial post? The flamer does work however against MEQ it is a fail[u].
The options are not endless. Are you planning to stand 3" from an enemy and fire the fragprojector at them?
I am wanting units that can score the objective in one go. The old shoot them off then move on scores to slowly. If you need the objective taking unit to be supported then you have not understood the purpose of the unit.
You could have a flamer suit (for the GEQ) and a squad of two duel plasma suits (for MEQ) for under 150points.
For non Farsight armies this might tie up too many elite slots.
You will also be at the mercy of the reserve roll and the timing of objective cards. Unless you were planning to deploy them on the board and run forwards.

Tau and Objectives

Ok so not every unit can just kill a marine unit in one go. In fact, I would say that almost any unit that costs the same as a 5 man MEQ squad will have extreme difficulty killing a squad of marines. Which is why I suggested taking a crisis suit that has objective: secured. You can basically take 3 of them for the same price as a single tactical squad. Each one has 3 less wounds but can (and should almost always) deep strike. And as you noted, that tactical flexibility is extremely important. Even more importantly, 3 such single man squads can be in 3 places at once, which is not something that the one marine squad can do

The concept of killing a unit off of an objective (and then taking that objective) is a flawed one. Most units that are good at shooting you to death don't want to stand on the corpse of your dead body (except for assault units. And you know, we play Tau). If you're REALLY set on that concept, grab the forge world Riptide. Y'Havra? I always spell it wrong. That can do what you want it to.

You're correct that reserves rolls could be an issue for my suits. Thankfully, there is a strategic warlord trait that helps mitigate that greatly. Plus, often you want most of your guys not to come in on the same turn. So with 3 squads, 2 should come in.

It's not the most popular strategy to stand next to an objective and claim it while the enemy is there, but it is a winning one. While that doesn't work well against things like the space marine Demi company, that is their thing. It's like the only thing they do well. So you have to cede a bit of an early lead to them and kill them as you go. But the suits can still stop them from gaining as big of a lead.

Being able to tactically trade models for objectivss is what separates good players from great ones, and there are few more efficient and effective models in the Tau arsenal than crisis suits in a farsight CAD.
