Renegades...

So I have all my IG crap pretty much shelved until they get a decent update. I picked up the vraks book on ebay, fooled around with some lists on battlescribe and still have pretty much no idea where to start with renegades. I'd like to use the unending host, I have roughly 60-70 guardsmen, 5 leman russ, 2 valkries, 4 chimeras, 2 wyverns, commisars, priests, etc.

Is it at all possible to throw a 1850-2000 point army together with this?

Renegades...

Probably! I played against renegades in a local tournament over the weekend. He basically just had about 200 disposable bodies with some heavy and special weapons mixed in. Oh, and a chaos knight with some daemon bodies for grimoire shenanigans. The knight was rocking a 2+ rerollable ion shield save (3+ rerolling 1's save on its other facings) making it a tough nut to crack. The rest of his army came back on from outflank on a 2+ if I killed it, so I didn't really want to go after his little guys. It made for a nasty list. I imagine you could do something similar substituting those tanks for some of the heavy/special weapons this guy brought.

Renegades...

You'll need at least 100 infantry to run the Unending Host formation.

Minimum 2 platoons, which have their minimum size increased to 15. Minimum 3 squads per platoon. 90 infantry for those.

Then, since the formation requires 4 troops, you could take 2 5-man units of veterans. And they sorta suck.

*edit*

Make that 105, since the HQ command squad is 5-man minimum, too.

Don't just play renegades for the unending host... There's so many ways you can create a competitive list without relying on he purge or unending host detachments. Try and get IA13 also it has a really nice renegades list with extra slaanesh and Tzeentch flavours and also has the rules for the forgeworld toys your allied chaos marines can use.

You do have a point though, there are many other options. Purge is just the coolest to me. So much dakka that is actually meaningful, and doesn't require a 3 hour movement phase.

Renegades...

Unending host is fun.

It's even funnier with a Baneblade in the middle....

But seriously, Renegades can be so much more than just unending hordes. Might be worth looking at IA13 and playing around with those as well.

But the purge is hilarious, artillery for troops? Yes please.
