I picked up the vraks book on ebay, fooled around with some lists on battlescribe and still have pretty much no idea where to start with renegades. I'd like to use the unending host, I have roughly 60-70 guardsmen, 5 leman russ, 2 valkries, 4 chimeras, 2 wyverns, commisars, priests, etc.

Minimum 2 platoons, which have their minimum size increased to 15. Minimum 3 squads per platoon. 90 infantry for those.

Then, since the formation requires 4 troops, you could take 2 5-man units of veterans. And they sorta suck.

The Purge detachment is what made me want to start playing Renegades, though I prefer to run it unmarked. You do have a point though, there are many other options. Purge is just the coolest to me. But seriously, Renegades can be so much more than just unending hordes. Might be worth looking at IA13 and playing around with those as well.
