How to Make 40k More Fun!

So I have been considering something for a long time, but bear with me because it's pretty ridiculous. I decided to put this in the General forum rather than the Proposed forum because it's not so much a serious rules proposal as it is a way of looking at modern 40k that might shed some light on what people find upsetting about the current meta, and spark discussion on what, precisely, is wrong with 40k at the moment.

The way I wish to frame this discussion is to propose a hypothetical rules change, and then see what people believe the meta would do to adapt / whether or not the game would be more fun (rather than critiquing and editing the rule itself, as would occur in the Proposed forum, I believe). So the rules changes are as follows:

Remove the MC and GMC unit type. Reclass all MCs and GMCs as vehicles and superheavy vehicles (respectively) with the Walker type.

The armour values for said walkers are the Toughness of the relevant MC or GMC plus four (so a Hive Tyrant would be 10/10/10, a Tau'nar 13/13/13). For MCs, the Hull Points becomes equal to 3 as with most walkers, unless they are Toughness 10/AV14 and then they have 4 Hull Points. For GMCs, the hull points is equal to the number of Wounds on their GMC profile.

All rules that MCs/GMCs get for free are replaced wholesale with the rules that Walkers/Super-heavy Walkers get for free from their unit types.

Lastly, and most relevantly, points are adjusted accordingly.

Do you think the game would become more fun to play, less fun to play, or not change? Why do you think that is? What does this rule change about armies and metas?

Well MC do have their spots. MC from tyranids need to stay the way they are. They are organic ceatures so their only defence is their carapace/bug armor.

On the other hand, tau suits that are 3 times bigger then a leman russ, have a bunch of armor, look like a transformer and don't have vehicle stats, that I do agree with you. Is it an organic creature? nope, it' a big ass robot that should have AV 12/12/12 or something.

Re:How to Make 40k More Fun!

I don't think there's anything wrong with the rules for MCs and GMCs per se, except for the fact that they're inherently more advantageous than the rules for vehicles, and it gives the game two sets of rules for units that serve essentially the same functions. I'd support ditching the MC rules and having them be "vehicles", with all the inherent strengths and weaknesses, if only to clean up the rules set some.

That said, I don't think swapping those rules around are going to make the game inherently more fun, and if you're setting up to do it as a house rule, it's going to generate a lot of negative feelings on the part of those who have MCs in their armies.

What my group has been having success with for over a year is the following set of simple house rules:

1: No Allies
2: 40% Troops minimum
3: Psykers may use only their own power dice and those from the Harness the Warp roll at the beginning of the Psychic Phase

Those three rules do a lot to tone down the game's potential for abuse and do a good job evening out the relative power levels between armies. Practically all our games have been close and are often real nail biters, and we have a pretty broad range of armies - Eldar, Tau, Dark Angels, Imperial Guard, Chaos Space Marines, Blood Angels, and Sisters of Battle. Sisters actually do really well in this environment.

I'd prefer to go the other way and have everything function on the toughness/wounds system. Warmachine works that way and frail unarmored troops seem completely different from hulking armored monstrosities.

Shift cover back to a negative to hit modifier so everyone benefits equally from it. Alter Ignores Cover weapons to reduce the penalty imposed instead of negating it entirely and you'd have a much better system. IMO.

If you want a rule change that will make the game more fun or interesting then I have a solution that works amazingly in casual and especially tournament.

Each unit of yours that dies = 1 shot of spirits

Each Character = 2 shots

Each Vehicles = 1 shot

Trust me when I say there is nothing more interesting than watching the finals at a tournament when the two players played all previous games with these rules in place

How to Make 40k More Fun!

You can't remove GMC and MC's. Some units fit that profile inherently like a gargant or the avatar or a lot of the tyranid units. Removing a unit type isnt the answer. changing what they give that unit type is the answer. The Tau suits dont make sense to be GMC's or MC's. The wraithknight at least does to an extent as it is nearly the same as a wraithlord in terms that there are the souls of eldar within the wraithbone structure. It just also has a pilot at the same time. so it is a tad bit of a grey area.

I don't have a problem with people drinking during games, but this would only work with friends and if you all are not bad drunks. Usually when our group plays we do a game, and then retire to the bar for drinks and discuss how awesome the battle was.
