New Dakka Member - Intro, pics of models and needing some advice advice

http://imgur.com/a/rRt5v

Hey guys,

This is my first post here, please excuse the potato quality pics in the album.

A little background, I have been in and out of the hobby for around 16 years (started age 12 with some horrendous blood angels which were never under coated or based etc) Had lots of LARGE breaks, i'm talking years at a time, then something will pull me back in.

Well I have picked it up again after about a year. I went to GW and picked up some new paints (though most of mine were ok) and a Skitari starter set. I have decided to combine my first love (space marines) with an imperial and skitari army.

Anyway the album comprises of what I have to start my army. (Not pictured the 10 Skitari Rangers and the boss guy form the box set, 10 marines to accompany that 'sergeant' model, 2 more Militarium guys who I can't find atm and a couple of metal catachan snipers)

My idea is to go military green with the Millitarium guys, Red/cream/metal for the Skitari and then I was thinking of my own chapter for the marines although I have no idea what to call the. It will be an offshoot of Black Templars though with green power armor with dark purple fabrics and trim probably. Any help on naming would be great. So far I have come up with Chatreuse Templars or Templars of Taal...

This time I want to really improve my painting and modelling so I've been watching some youtube how-to's and got myself a 'wet-palete' for the first time and am experimenting with green stuff for base modelling a broken city scape (and got some terracotta bricks and some other stuff to make the bases pop).

I also have some other painted models including a SM command squad, terminators, bikes, dreadnought, whirlwind and predator. Problem with these is they were painted nearly 10 years ago, badly and I don't know how to strip them down without damaging them :(

Any ideas?

Re:New Dakka Member - Intro, pics of models and needing some advice advice

Welcome to Dakka - we don't bite... well most of us don't.

They are some great looking models - a very promising start! They're very neat and the colours are well balanced. The only real criticism I can offer is that some of the colours are a little flat. I'd recommend some extra highlighting to bring out the edges and contours. In any case, it's mostly only noticeable with the red and the green breastplates.

As for your two questions:

Metal models can be stripped in quite a few things. Isopropyl alcohol, Brake Fluid, Acetone Nail Polish Remover and Paint Thinners will all do the trick. Plastic or Resin models are a bit more difficult. Fairy Power Spray (Oven Cleaner Spray), Dettol Spray, Isopropyl Alcohol and Brake Fluid are all rumored to work, but I find the result varies and it is difficult to get the primer off as it acid-etches into the plastic. I strongly recommend you do some thorough research before you attempt to strip resin or plastic as they often react to chemicals such as Acetone Nail Polish remover or Paint Thinners and end up melting or going soft. If you aren't sure, either test the chemical with a bit of sprue first or avoid it all together.

As for the name, it often helps to write yourself up a little bit of a backstory first. Then you can pick out bits that appeal to you and for the name around them.

Anyway, Welcome to Dakka and I hope this helps.

Very nice so far!!

WarhammerTV has amazing painting tutorial vids on YouTube on some of the models you have. I highly recommend checking them out. Another Youtuber The Apathetic Fish has awesome vids as well. I learned pretty much by watching those two channels. I'm very much a newb to painting and really think those channels have a lot to offer someone who is still learning.

Here's a two part vid to the Tempestus Scions painting tutorial.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LCE4T_1b58A
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qDO2adNZ9w8

Thanks for the kind words and advice.

Here is an update on my Scibor/GW meshed tactical squad sergeant, I like how he came out. I'm sorry for potato quality pics but hope you get the gist.

http://imgur.com/a/Gmazi

Next up on my painting list is my betrayal at Calth chaplain. I'm keeping him standard except for a couple of purity seals.

I am delaying putting my tactical quad together till later in the week as I have ordered some really small link chains to use with them and I still have a number of templar shoulder pads to add to them to tie them in with their commander.

I'll keep you updated, hopefully with a better camera soon.

I used this stuff to strip my old catachans from 15-16years ago... and some cadians I painted earlier this year when I started again.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Biostrip-Stripper-remover-solution-effortlessly/dp/B00B4WK17K

Soaked them for 2hrs then went over then with an old toothbrush. Worked a treat on both plastic and metal, with no damage to the detail.
