[1000] - Salamanders - Help!

So, I've decided to get into WH and start a Salamander army as I already have a few models, but I have literally no understanding of the game or how to even make an army, and I'm wondering what step I should take next. I want to start 40k, and I was wondering if you guys could help, so here are the models I have right now:

Terminator Close Combat Squad,
Centurion Assault Squad,
Venerable Dreadnought,
Tactical Squad,
Terminator Captain

Thanks guys!

Do you have the 7th edition rulebook and the space marine codex? Those would be good places to start.

You do have the right models to form an army. Each of those units is classified as either troops/HQ/elite/fast attack/heavy support. To form an army, you have to have the minimum amount of troops and HQ (2 troops, one HQ. You'd have to form 2 units with your tactical marines, they are your only troop.) and can't exceed the maximum "slots" allowed for any particular classification. (0-3 Elite/Fast Attack/Heavy support, 1-2 HQ, 2-6 Troops.) This is all based on what's called a CAD detachment, which is the standard way to organize armies. There are other detachments and formations that have their own rules, but you'll learn more about that as you go.

The next thing to know is each model is worth a certain amount of points, we use this to make sure two armies are evenly balanced before they play. Common point limits are 500, 1000, 1500, and 1850. Anything in between or over is still possible as long as your opponent agrees.

The Codex will have more info was to what models classify as which units, and how many points they cost. The codex is basically instructions on how to make an army, and the rulebook will tell you how to play the game.
