New supplements versus Chapter choice.

So, I'm really digging the new psychic powers and such in the Angels of Death supplement. Here is the problem: I am still starting out and only have 500 points of Black Templars.

I'm considering keeping what I have, and just having them as an allied force for Ultramarines that I build out from now on. Is this a good idea? Is it worth staying with the Templars?

Cryo84r wrote:
So, I'm really digging the new psychic powers and such in the Angels of Death supplement. Is this a good idea? Is it worth staying with the Templars?

Ah... Welcome to the club of abhorrence haha. As CS said, you can run the models with any Chapter Tactics regardless of how you play them, but I perosnally don't find that to be much fun. With the current rules, there is nothing stopping you from doing what you're asking about, and it's something I've considered doing myself. In all honesty, I think the current rules are a bit lacking in terms of how relaxed Black Templars are in terms of letting their allies take psykers, and as a result I tend to not let Imperial Allies (if I play a game with anyone other than the Inquisition or their Chamber Militant forces) takes psykers.

My Advice

-- While you're starting out, running Black Templars with allies (such as the Ultra-Smurfs in their row boats) who can take psykers is fine. It's definitely a decent idea to try this.

-- If and when you get more Space Marine models, I recommend trying to run your Black Templars like I do (i.e. never let your Imperial Allies take Psykers unless they're the Inquisition) at least once. It's a good piece of fun and definitely a challenge, especially against psyker-heavy or psyker-reliant lists.

But running them with a different Chapter Tactics is fine, and I'd absolutely suggest doing that. I switch between Chapter Tactics for my marines all the time, although I tend to run as WS and IH most of the time.

I'm not telling anyone how to play with the toy soldiers they bought, but I will suggest that the chapter tactics rules are there to represent the idiosyncrasies of various existing chapters in the background. They're not there so you can have fnp marines this week and hit&run marines the next, although that's certainly something you can do.

You are just starting out so its fine to play around with different chapter tactics and styles and see what appeals to you. You may even enjoy making a custom chapter to do this.

Ultimately I'd recommend choosing a chapter and sticking with it, both as a courtesy to your opponent (WYSIWYG) and so you get good at using that chapter. You may also find it is more rewarding to collect and play with a specific force rather than a bunch of power armoured stand-ins for whatever's hot.

Be aware that Dettol, Fairy power spray and other household products are an inexpensive way to strip the paint off plastic models- you can repaint those BT models if you want. A little googling will help you out.

Good luck and have fun!
