Pretty sure the fight between Horus and the Emperor hasn't been elaborated on since they introduced the Perpetuals.

The idea of the Emperor becoming a Warp God stems in part from the Star Child fluff. In Inquisitor I believe there was also mention of the Emperor being able to be reborn but some were opposed to it (for fear it would tear the Imperium asunder).

Merely destroying Terra couldn't really save the Imperium even if it was in dire straits.

I don't think it can be a silver bullet save, otherwise they'd already have pushed the button. Damage limitation, and preventing the enemy from claiming the Golden Throne, and the Emp's body, seems more likely.
