Hello all,

I've been collecting minis for a while now, and want to compile a decent list for more casual games. Below is a list that I've drawn up from what I do have (will be in italics, if it helps) and what I plan on picking up at some point or another (since its largely Imperial/Crimson Fists, Longer range firepower and bolters are very attractive)

HQ

Pedro Kantor
185 points

Librarian
-Mastery Level 2
90 points

Troops
Tactical Squad
-10 Marines
-Plasma Gun
-Lascannon
-Sergeant w/ Combi-Plasma
-Rhino
220 Points

Tactical Squad
-10 Marines
-Plasma Gun
-Plasma Cannon
-Sergeant w/ Combi-Plasma
-Rhino
215 points

Tactical Squad
-10 Marines
-Flamer
-Multi-Melta
-Sergeant w/ Combi-Flamer
-Rhino
205 Points

Elites
Honor Guard
-5 Honor Guard
-Champion w/ Relic Blade
-Land Raider
395 points

Fast Attack
Land Speeders
-3 Land Speeders w/ dual Multi-Meltas
210 points

Heavy Support
Centurion Devastators
-Lascannons
-Missile Launchers
-Sergeant w/ Omniscope

Stalker
75 points

Total: 1845 points

[1850] - Space Marines (Crimson Fists)

Welcome to Dakka and the Space Marines.

Not a bad looking list.

From a structure POV, I’d look into formations. They are all the rage these days. If you build around them, there is a lot of free power to pick up. At the cost of restricting your options, but generally worth it.

You are pretty close to a battle demi-company, and once you hit that, a Gladius is not far off.

On to what you have:
HQs are fine.

First tac squad is good. Some would argue against the heavy in a tac squad, but I like them there. Las/Plas likes to shoot the same kind of thing, and the sarge with a matching combi is a solid choice.

Second tac I’m not as fond of. Plasma Cannons can’t snap shot, so work poorly in tac squads on the move. Plus are generally lackluster. Small blasts don’t work very well in general. At least the squad has a solid purpose in life (shooting AP2 at things). You might want to consider grav cannons on these two squads. They are expensive, but nasty.

The third squad I’ve got actual issues with. When will a melta and a flamer want to shoot the same target? And if you do shoot the melta at a tank, what’s the rest of the squad doing? And when the whole squad takes time to gun for a tank, what are the odds of you killing it? It generally takes 4ish melta shots to reliably pop a tank. A lot of things can change this number, and “reliably” is a very subjective term. If you are going to put melta in a tac squad (which I do advocate and enjoy) go all-in. Multi-melta, meltagun, combi-melta on the sarge. That way when you do try to pop a tank, you are getting enough shots to actually do the job. If you want to keep the tac squad for anti-horde duty with flamers, you are probably going to want to drop the MM for a HB.

There are a lot of things out there that can pop open a LR without even blinking. But there are also a number of lists that rely on spamming mid-strenght shots to HP out tanks, which will take forever to kill it. Land Raider in general are viewed as over priced and non competitive. I do enjoy fielding mine from time to time, and it does OK, but I play in a more casual environment. Just be aware of this. They are iconic, fun, and look cool.

HG are a solid unit. You might want to take the chapter banner. I believe it’s Attack bonus stacks with Kantors. Might want to mix a few axes in with the swords if you are still putting them together.

My speeder of choice is a TML/HB speeder. The Duel MM speeder can get the job done though. Generally don’t squadron unless you have to. They are more flexible solo. If you do squadron them, 3 is overkill. Especially with MMs, they are going to get in each others way. I find pairs is a good compromise. In general, bikes are going to work better for fast melta delivery. But speeders work.

Not a huge fan of Cents, but that’s mostly due to fluff and looks. They should get the job done though. Just be careful with them. A little AP2 gets tossed their way and those very expensive models are going away. Stick them in cover, and probably babysit/buff them with the librarian.

Stalker is a fine AA tank.

If you are still building, I’m going to again direct you to formations. Especially as your list is 90% there.

A battle demi-co needs a chaplain or a captain, 3 tac squads, and a pick from both a FA and HS type list (there are a number of options) With the exception if the HQ you have that. The problem is fitting the rest of your stuff in. If you use formations, everything needs to be in a slot, and you can’t just tack more things on (unless you take a more open detachment like a CAD and fill it’s mandatory picks)

Things that won’t fit into the company:
Kantor
Librarian
HG
Stalker
Things you still need to fill the mandatory slots
Captain or Chaplain.

Kantor and the HG are easy to put into a Gladius. One you have the basics, you can add 0-3 command things, and they fit there. The librarian would need 2 more friends to fit in as part of a conclave. The stalker could work as part of a AA formation, but would need two friends. What to cut for points and what to add might be rough. I’d suggest looking through the option and seeing what looks cool to you.

Thank you for the response.

I think I will definitely go for the HB for horde control. I do like many of the formations, but as you said they are a bit restrictive in some regards. I'll work around with some of the point totals, see what I come up with
