Best trees for making forest terrain?

Hey,
So I've been trying to find some forest terrain but can't seem to find any woods that I like or for a decent price so settling on making my own.

I have looked at the woodlands scenics ones but they are kind of pricey about $30 and they seem kind of small.
Does anyone know any brands or where I can pick up some trees to make some forests? I'd like trees 6" or maybe a tad larger.

Also what would you base them on? Just some hardboard or something?

If you want them to be affordable, you'll have to make your own. There are lots of tutorials available from model railroading sites and youtube channels. This is the best one I've found so far:

Woodland scenics sells some tree kits that are really fun and affordable. You bend little plastic trees into shapes, then glue the flock on them. You just need this kit and some glue. http://www.walmart.com/ip/37292177?wmlspartner=wlpa&adid=22222222227025940153&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=52400122095&wl4=&wl5=pla&wl6=79485222375&veh=sem

Totally worth watching for however!

As for basing, I'd really say either craft plywood (basswood) or MDF is best. You can use hardboard but imo it's a bit thin generally for that purpose alone, maybe if you make it doubled near the tree itself. Anyway just some thoughts!

Best trees for making forest terrain?

You should be able to pick it up at any garden center, including Walmart, Home Depot, etc. It's used to line hanging flower baskets.

Edit: It just occurred to me that you could also use the same technique mounted to twigs or branches instead of skewers to make deciduous trees. It'd take a little experimenting, but the results may be worth it.
