Paint Racks & Storage

I got sick of having paints scattered all over my table, so I built some racks out of lego to get me by. I've been hunting for something affordable online, but the only good ones I've seen are for Vallejo, and I already have a big collection of GW paints. What do you use? I need a circular saw for some work around the house, so I was thinking of building my own out of wood in the future.

Re:Paint Racks & Storage

If you're going to get a circ saw anyway, you may as well build your own. Shelves are about the easiest thing you can make. Old pallets are a great source of lumber, but you will put in some serious sweat equity when it comes to taking them apart without causing too much damage. If you have a local place to get used construction materials (like Habitat ReStore or EcoCycle) you can get plywood, OSB, or other materials for dirt cheap and then build the shelf around the dimensions of your paint collection and hobby area. Even if you have to bite the bullet and go to a hardware store, the costs won't be extreme.

In the image below, the shelf on the left is a plywood back with OSB sides & shelves finished with trim. For fasteners, I used leftover decking screws and wood glue. Since OSB is a splinter-factory, I mudded the whole thing with drywall compound and gave it a rough sand before painting with leftover house paint. The shelf on the right is the carcass from an old bathroom cabinet with the doors removed.

I simply threw money at the problem, and bought the back2 basix rack:

I wrote a fairly lengthy review here: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/665363.page

The take away is that it's simply fantastic if you can stomach the price.
