After building my 1500 pts of Cult Solaris (Dark eldar.) I felt something was missing from my gaming experience.
And that was a proper board to play on, with some beatifull scenery.
After looking at the site of GW and others, i decided that those weren't for me. (especially not for my wallet)

So an idea was born to build my own Battlefield, and now with the timely arrival of my vacation money it was time to get started!

The goal was to build a dark ruined city (wich would contrast nicely with my yellow Dark Eldar) but first we had to start from the ground up.

Step 1:
I decided to not have a board made out of one piece, because i would like to transport it easily, so i could play with friends.
The best option was to cut it in 6 Pieces.

The Lovely Wife decided to help me on this Quest for greater gaming experiences!

Step 2:
Buy a lot of crap to make the table (Paint, glue, cardboard,...)

A handy storage box is a must! (So you don't anger The Lady with a messy house)

Step 3
Sanding down the rough edges

Step 4
Prepare the Glue

Step 5
Use the sticky glue

Pro tip from the wife: Some covers underneath saves a lot of cleaning

Step 6
We decide to ad some variety to the board by making some pavements. These were made out of cardboard cut in different sizes.
This took a long time to do, but with some music and good company it goes very smooth.

Step 7
Add some bigger rocks and then use sand for the rest of the board.
(We used sand that is used in concrete, because its made up out of different sizes)

Step 8
Repeat the process 5 Times

Highlight the stones and sand. And then varnish everything

Now i have to wait 24 hours for it to set. and then i can ad the last few things. (better higlights)

Things i would do better next time:
- Use better glue, because the sand dropped of the plank while i was highlighting it. Which meant spray painting again, and losing time.
- Use stronger highlights, and then soft highlight the sand
- maybe spread the work over two days, so i had more patience in road building

Anyhoo, I hope you liked it.
It was the first time i scratchbuild something so i'm really proud of the board.
It was fairly cheap to build at around 65 euro's. So i'm happy with that.

Next time i will start on some scenery, so stay tuned.

Today we continue the Quest for Greater Gaming Experiences.
After dropping in by the local second hand shop i found a little schield that would look awesome as some sort of monument in the ruined city.
So that was the goal so lets get started!

@Albanyadriel: Glad you liked it.

i also added some new tips at the end of this that i hope will help someone, as they try to make their own gamingboard.

Step 1:
Get your stuff together

- The plastic shield
- figure saw
- sheet of wood

Step 2:
Saw off an appropriated sized base from the wooden plank.

The easiest way to know how big the base needs to be, is to place the item on the wood and just draw around it with a marker

Step 3:
Glue the shield to the base and add some cardboard tiles

Pro tip: use gloves when using the glue gun, that way it stick to the gloves and not your fingers.

Step 4:
Add some rocks with the glue gun and spraypaint it black

Step 5:
Drybrush the entire thing.
I also decided to ad a simple coloring on a few things, just to lighten the scenery up.

It is rumoured that this monument build by the House of Val'ter holds the remains of the House of Rem'lak, who mysteriously dissapeared one day.
Some of the older citizens still remember hearing faint screams as they walked past the newly erected monument.

So that was my hobby "work" from today, here are the things i learned:
- You don't have to buy wood, just go to a carpenter or a "do-it-yourself"-shop and ask for leftover wood. They will often give it for free.
- A glue gun is a must if you decide to make your own scenery
- The downside of using a glue gun is that you often make long thin "glue-hair" that you have to pluck out manually. I just waited until it was dry and went over it with a hairbrush.
- Doing a more wet drybush before a lighter dryer drybrush really helps picking out details

Time for a small update. Today i started on the first building.

As you can see, it's far to cheerful to be used on a post apocalyptic battlefield.
So i removed the grass and the top half of the building.
I also went to town with a hammer to add some battle damage.

The plan is to build a ladder to the roof, add a lot of debris (in- and outside), add tiles,...

Today i continued the work on the building, adding some basic things.

I added some cardboard pavement, and some sand so the piece would blend in better with the gamingfloor. Something i wished i did for the monument too.

My first go at making some fences, i really like the result and i'm planning to make some longer fences to put on the battlefield.

I always liked buildings you can put your guys into but i always disliked how annoying it was to measure and move your guys inside. So i made every cardboard stone about an inch
long, that way i don't have to measure and just count squares.

I added a silo to the building and spraypainted it black.

As usual i drybrushed the whole thing and then added some extra bits to liven up the scenery.

That's right some green goo containers, which self respecting sci-fi warehouse wouldn't have some of those?

Some rust for the metals.

On the inside i added a container with there in a goblin on a spider. (Sorry for the photo quality)

And thats scenery piece nr:2, join me next time as i start with the next project!

The chemical goo things are vaccine containers, that i filled with watered down green vallejo paint, but still really thick. The containers have a rubber lip so you have to inject the fluid with a syringe but the water inside will never vanish. I bought and painted a GW scenery box. They are very nice. I'm in love with the statue

And i decided it was time to get some additions to my Dark Eldar army.

Next update will probably be some painted miniatures.
