Starting a Dark Angels army

Hi all,

I have only painted the odd model here and there and have struggled to find the time / motivation to paint an army. I have decided to try and paint a small strike force, starting with Dark Angels. I read that one of the ways to improve motivation of painting an army is to blog the progress, so here goes nothing! I will start with some models from the dark vengeance set:

- Tactical squad
- Chapter master

I picked these up fairly cheap to be used as a test.

I wanted to ask how people have got on using the standard paint scheme that GW recommend? Are there any deviations that people recommend? I am going to be using brushes, not an airbrush.

I am also thinking of how I will base the army. I have seen mixed reviews of the textured paint and cork bases, what does everyone typically use? Lastly does everyone base their models before undercoating, or create / paint the base separately and then glue the models to the finished base once the model has been completed?

Would appreciate any tips you guys have!

cheers,
Matt.

Re:Starting a Dark Angels army

First off, welcome to Dakka, and welcome to the Sons of the Lion! I myself have a Dark Angels army, so I would be happy to tell you about what I do. As far as the recommended scheme, I tend to follow it exactly. One thing I do differently is to use Mephiston Red instead of Khorne Red for the gun casings and tactical arrows on the shoulder pads. To me, Khorne Red is a little too dark for this. Other than that the recommended scheme is pretty solid and looks great when done right. For basing, I swear by GW's texture paints. They look great when shaded and drybrushed. I glue the figure onto the base and paint it, then I do the base. There is risk of messing up the paint job, but it is ok. If a little bit gets on the mini's legs, I can either fix it relatively easily or just say it is mud that splashed onto his legs.

I look forward to seeing your stuff once it's painted!

I used this method for my DA and I really like how it came out. It's a little bit of work but if you take your time you'll love how they look.

http://taleofpainters.blogspot.co.uk/2015/06/tutorial-how-to-paint-dark-angel.html

Thanks guys, the tale of painters guide looks like a good challenge! I am going to pick up some Lahmian Medium as it seems like a a great way to get some nice blending.

Quick update: I've removed all the mould lines (The Dark Vengeance set had so many!), under-coated and applied two thin based coats of Caliban Green.
