I have only painted the odd model here and there and have struggled to find the time / motivation to paint an army. I have decided to try and paint a small strike force, starting with Dark Angels. I read that one of the ways to improve motivation of painting an army is to blog the progress, so here goes nothing! I will start with some models from the dark vengeance set:

- Tactical squad
- Chapter master

I picked these up fairly cheap to be used as a test.

I wanted to ask how people have got on using the standard paint scheme that GW recommend? Are there any deviations that people recommend? I am going to be using brushes, not an airbrush.

I am also thinking of how I will base the army. I have seen mixed reviews of the textured paint and cork bases, what does everyone typically use? Lastly does everyone base their models before undercoating, or create / paint the base separately and then glue the models to the finished base once the model has been completed?

Would appreciate any tips you guys have!

They look great when shaded and drybrushed. I glue the figure onto the base and paint it, then I do the base. There is risk of messing up the paint job, but it is ok. If a little bit gets on the mini's legs, I can either fix it relatively easily or just say it is mud that splashed onto his legs.
