Tyranids on Square Bases

Hi guys

I still play Warhammer Fantasy regularly, now we've been planning a large scale campaign in our gaming group. In the last battle report the Chaos Warriors faced off against the Skaven and long story short a lot of magic and warpstone got scattered over the battlefield

During the campaign the winner is allowed to pick three possible side effects of the battle (things like, the Dwarf Miners accidentally unleashed a horde of Gorgers, a destroyed Skaven Doomwheel rolled down the hill and attracted the attention of Lumpin Croop's Fighting Cocks, or the situation we came up with in this last battle, the Magic and Warpstone mutated the local wildlife.

Originally the plan was to give the Warriors of Chaos some free Chaos Spawn, but we decided to try something a little different, and claim it was a lot of insects that got mutated.

So we're going to be using Tyranid counts-as models. The problem we have now is simple, base sizes. This is fantasy and we do hope they'll rank up, so what size bases should we be looking at? We're mainly planning to use Hormagaunts, Genestealers and either a Carnifex or Tervigon.

Would the Hormagaunts rank up if put on cavalry bases? How about the Genestealers? 25mm or 40mm bases? And the big ones, what are we looking at here?

Fitting on a base and ranking up are two separate, albeit related, things. Nids tend to have arms and spikes everywhere, so probably would require a larger base then normal if they want to rank up.

What version of the rules are you using? I don’t see mutated wildlife necessarily ranking up. IIRC there should be rules for skirmishers/light infantry (I forget the buzzword) that lets you fight in an open formation. Might be better to use. If you do need to pack in for combat, just get them as close together as you can and assume the front rank can hit them all.

Have you concidered idea of movement trays that are designed with round based in mind? Albeit probably results in tad larger footprint which is bit of negative gaming wise but I doubt you are aiming for tournament optimized things

This way you could use them still in 40k.

Much like many daemon players(at least used to before FB got blown) use round bases with movement trays allowing use in FB as well.

Another thought, if you are homebrewing rules for them anyway, is to stat them up as “mutant wildlife swarms” or something like that. Don’t bother basing them all individually, but just get a big base and glue a bunch of nids on it. How big depends on taste.

Less worry about bumping elbows that way.

Our initial plan was to have the mutated animals be under the control of a Sorcerer using the Lore of Beasts, with the Hormagaunts being (potentially, depending on base size) counts as Chaos Hounds, the Genestalers either being Counts-As Savage Orcs or Chaos Spawn (depending on base size) and the Tervigon as one of our Homebrew 'Giant Monsters' (we have quite a few large monster figures from other companies running about, mainly Mierce)

But

Nevelon wrote:
Another thought, if you are homebrewing rules for them anyway, is to stat them up as “mutant wildlife swarms” or something like that.
I have heard of someone putting hormagaunts on rectangular cavalry bases. It was an attempt to stop them tipping over, as they are horribly front-heavy on the small round bases they come with.
Can't find any pictures, but apparently they are a perfect fit.
