What is the best ally for the Tau?

I believe the best kind of ally is the one that complements your warmy to fill weaknesses. Tau has mostly 2: Psykers and Melee.

Eldar can provide both, but their units that do those aren't cheap.
Necron can provide good cost-benefit Melee units, mostly with the Canoptek Harvest formation.
The Culexus assassin cna help defend against psykers.

Those aside, I don't think other armies could help Tau that much.
What is the best ally for the Tau?

Eldar and Necrons seem to be the only decent Allies, but I would say Necrons moreso because they specifically address a weakness in Tau.

Eldar are great allies because Eldar, but most of what they bring is the same as Tau: Mobile platforms with tons of shooting. In this case, you are better off with more Tau who can provide/use marker lights and supporting fire.

Necrons on the other hand (specifically 1-2 Canoptek Harvests) can provide a deadly and durable CC threat for relatively cheap. Not to mention the conversion possibilities of CC suits as count as Wraiths/Spyders and "Drone" scarabs.

While I generally think that most of the responses, that “more Tau” is the best ally for Tau, are fundamentally correct; this is mostly due to the introduction of the Stormsurge. Two things the 'Surge gives us: Stomps and StrD, while still being able to access the buffs and bonuses form other Tau force multipliers (Markerlights, Coordinated Firepower, Networked Stealth Fields, etc).

With that in mind, I usually think about what Allies can offer as indirect buffs and and roles they can fill.
What is the best ally for the Tau?

Two things the 'Surge gives us: Stomps and StrD, while still being able to access the buffs and bonuses form other Tau force multipliers (Markerlights, Coordinated Firepower, Networked Stealth Fields, etc).

With that in mind, I usually think about what Allies can offer as indirect buffs and and roles they can fill. Tau often seen as very one-dimensional, and are often played like that, but that is only true if you want it to be. I askmyself these questions:
1) What do you want to do strategicly with the Tau part of your list?
2) What are your favorite Tau units to field?
3) What do these do poorly?
3) What Ally could fill that gap?
For me, the answers would go like this:
1) I want to maximize the ability to maneuver on the battle field, applying pressure where needed and adapting to my own weaknesses or mistakes (which I make a ton of).
2) Ghostkeels, Tetras, and Kroot
3) Assault against a dedicated Close Combat unit, limited low AP shooting.
4) Already mentioned is the Canoptek Harvest, great tarpit ability to buy my shooting units time to get through good Saves with volume of fire. Another choice could be a Renegade Knight or IKnight, AP3 with high rate of fire (double Avenger Renegade), or maybe a Crusader. The StrD close combat Knight versions (Lancer especially) have a lot of potential as well.
With the age of formations you can really mix-and-match with lots of success. Need a bunch of fast AP2? Hornet Swarm! Need some Grav? Skyhammer! Want decent Fliers for once? Crimson Death! Want to spam a bunch of great AP3? Destroyer Cult! Invisible Deathstar got you down? Culexus!

Identifing the intangible benefits from whatever Ally fits your needs, can also pay dividends, and make up for the lack of Battle Brothers. What if I wanted melee and psychic boosting? Which army/formation would you suggest then?

I also see several have suggested Eldar or Necrons. I like that way of thinking as well.

My opponents don't mind seeing them spammed in casual games (I like to take five), because they're not Riptides. In more local tournaments three are a good defensive force multiplier in the Ghostkeel Wing (the OSC is great, but I love having three independent units of these guys). Tetras are the fastest Markerlight platform we have, almost always get cover with their low profile (+ Stealth with the Ghostkeels) so don't need to Jink, never test leadership, and are decent at scoring hits against Fliers and Invis units. Love those little guys! When FW drops the new Red Scorpions/Tau book I will be shocked if they don't include Formations for their stuff, potentially allowing them in the Combi-Detachments like they did with the Eldar. I can't wait to see the possibilities there.

d00mspire wrote:
I like this way of thinking... What if I wanted melee and psychic boosting? Which army/formation would you suggest then?

Melee has lots of potential choices. Harvest, obviously can tie up even the nastiest assault units for a while, only about the cost of a base Stormsurge for a full unit of Wraiths. A IKnight is can bring the D and Stomps to assault, the Lancer (with the new FAQ) and Atropos are particularly gross. CAD Eldar can just slot in a Wraithknight for a LoW, Sword and Board being great.
For Psychics, that's tougher. You can't really "boost" Tau directly because they have no Battle Brothers. Reliable Psychic formations (Seer Council, Librarius Conclave) are usually more geared to support and help with Blessings. You could try to add Maledictions to debuff the opponents, Doom is particularly effective when paired with Tau high Strength and rate of fire shooting. Psychic Shriek is always great with a Jetseer as well. A Jetseer pulling for Doom can always count on getting Guide to increase the output from his Scat Pack or a Wraith Cannon Knight.
You could always try to find a middle ground for both. A Nemesis Strike Force with Level 3 Librarian with the Domina Liber Demonica will have a good selection of powers, and Purge Soul, Cleansing Flame, and Vortex are all fun. Splash a Dreadknight or two for melee. Dreadknights often need to be dealt with before they can make their turn 2 charge, which could take pressure off of your Markerlights. The Personal Teleporter will give them the flexibility to deploy outside of "One Eye Open" range, but still get to where they need to go quickly. Downside is that any Deathstar or dedicated Assault unit should be able to deal with a Dreadknight in a single round of combat (unless you can soften them up first). Banishment wont come up too often, but could be helpful in a pinch. I know I see far too much Grimoire/Cursed Earth in tandem (Tzeench 2++ rerolling ones Chaos Knight, grumble grumble).
