Modeling "worn" earth bases?

I am trying to make some bases for some bolt action minis that resembles the ground in this screen shot of "Fury". It doesn't look muddy but neither does it look grassy. It looks well worn but not to the point of being a "no mans land". Does anyone have a idea on just how to do this ?

Modeling "worn" earth bases?

Its mostly compacted dead grass and dirt it looks like.

im thinking earth blend flock from woodland scenic, + some burnt static grass from woodland scenic. mixed and glued onto a brown painted base first with rocks if you want them.

then on top add some dirt colored weathering powder to simulate it being compacted.

then seal the whole thing in a matt varnish.

I think you might like to try using some plaster mixed with some pigment or enamel wash and a bit of static flock. Or there's even pre-mixed stuff (a bit more expensive) that would suit, like MiG products.

http://www.ak-interactive.com/app/pdf/AK%20016%20FRESH%20MUD.pdf

http://migproductions.com/2013/01/introducing-new-mud-family-just-mud/
