Help painting black leather (shiny leather)

I tend to do a lot of shiny style leather (boots, gloves etc) but I'm not really happy with my results. I do the black base, paint up grey to white highlights for the shine, then wash. Anyway,, anyone out there have a better technique? Or suggestions? Go check my Sister's of Steel gallery for some examples of what I've done (I just don't like it, but hey, I know I am not the greatest painter). Keep in mind, I am painting tabletop here. I am not the guy to spend 5 hours on each model putting 30 layers of super thinned paint (not that I have anything against that...I lack the brush control and time...and want a painted army to play with in less than a year...70 troops times 3 hours each when I have about 6 hours a week to paint...)
Anyway, anything would be helpful, thanks guys.

I do black highlighted with browns (rather than greys or blues)...

Also this might be a good opportunity to use the new GW gloss washes, though I haven't tried this myself. Since you've already painted them with grey and white perhaps you could try the Gloss Agrax Earthshade over them. Try it on one if it's just too glossy you can always go over it with a matte varnish.

Shiny black leather goes from black to (basically) white with very little in between. So you undercoat black, do a first highlight with a Paine's Grey or P3 Coal Black, then go straight to a sparse final/edge highlight with pure white. Best bet is to skip the final glaze entirely and just use a satin or gloss varnish to finish.
