Mordian Iron Guard and my return to 40K

I used to play Imperial Guard starting in 2003 and ending around the dawn of 5th edition. Ever since I laid eyes on the beautiful pictures in the 3rd edition rulebook of the mordians in their immaculate dress uniforms (it was the epaulets that really did it) I was smitten with those models. sadly it was not to come to pass, and my IG soldiered on in standard cadian outfits just like most other regiments, though they eventually became mechanized. then I drifted into FOW and gave up 40k, until now. I managed to score a ton of mordians on ebay, and quickly had the army of my dreams materialize after 13 years of waiting.

here's what I have to paint
27 heavy weapons teams
6 squads of 10
3 command squads
3 commissars
3 leman russes (the other lure that got me into the IG and 40k in general)

I have already started, and completed 10 men, so to recap what has already happened:
here's my initial test model

I tried an experimental guy with a white jacket as a command squad scheme, but that didn't work out (colour combo looked wrong), so now they're all going to be traditional mordians, but the command squads will have nice white gloves to stand out.

here's the first batch of 10

right now, I have a squad that is almost done with blues besides the final highlight of the pants and cartridge boxes (for lack of a better term) which are a lighter blue, and I am waiting on 3 kits which I plan to steal bits from to customize my leman russes (WWI tank kits, more on that when they show up, hopefully this week). I hope to update this log regularly as I progress.

yeah, it was the traditional scheme that got me into 40k, so true to the original I will remain (though my blues are brighter, but I like it that way). I also cannot wait to see them fielded en masse, but wait I must, I calculate at least a month of painting lies ahead of me before I am finished with this undertaking.

I intend to stick to the traditional except where the tanks and heavy weapons are concerned, the lascannons, mortars, etc. will probably get the base color of the tanks, while the missiles will share the lasgun scheme (I may stick with the traditional paint on the heavy weapons teams though, we'll see when I get there)

here is the last two days work, all the red and blue is done on squad 2

Looking good so far! I've never had the patience to paint hordes so the IG have always been a last choice army for me! Specialists and expensive point squads mean less monotonous painting for me!

What if you went with an actual pure white for the jackets of your commanders?

after the test model (which is whiter than the picture, when seen in person) I still don't think the white jackets does it for me, but white pants might be alright, still, I think at this point I'll just lock in to the traditional for all (less the gloves) just to make things easier. as for the patience required, the only thing that will keep this moving is my love for the models, I could not do this with cadians, I'd just do a lesser tabletop standard job rather than using three colors for each main part, I'd definitely also drybrush and use washes, but not on these guys.

Re:Mordian Iron Guard and my return to 40K

I do not plan to add any of the victoria resins, initially I toyed with the idea of using them exclusively, but then I found the perfect listing on ebay (60 guys, an officer, a commissar and 21 heavy weapons) so I decided to go exclusively GW mordians. hilariously enough, I think it has turned out cheaper than victoria miniatures. I then managed to get the rest of what I needed off of another listing, bringing me to the totals I listed in my first post. I don't really have a need for more men at this time, as I sit comfortably at 1850pts now, and it has enough fangs in the heavy weapons (9 lascannons, 9 missile launchers, and 3 autocannons) to see me through battles (I think, haven't played them yet, I am still debating whether or not to play them before they are done).

Automatically Appended Next Post:
all the yellow for squad two is now done. hopefully the WWI kits will come in this week, and I can entertain you guys with my modified leman russes, until then, you're going to see infantry and lots of them

Automatically Appended Next Post:
speaking of tanks, I'm still trying to figure out what paint scheme I want to do with them, I more or less have it narrowed down to 4 or so, based on real world examples (actually I'll be matching them)

firstly, two WWII french camos, the first on a somua S-35 and the second on a char-b1 (whose track guards I am replicating on my russes)
Somua S-35 (not sure how this would work with the sponsons of the russ in the way)

Char B-1

now for two WWI options, the first a german A7V (I will be naming all three russes after A7Vs that fought in the war) and then a french pattern

A7V

French Pattern (seen here on a schneider CA1)

Automatically Appended Next Post:
going for an agriworld sort of basing, table (and display board eventually), so factor that into opinions on tank coloration.

Leman russes have been assembled to more or less complete status. I await the WWI kits to complete them, and at that time I will add stowage, rivets and other such customizations. also, mordians (at least mine) are made of a stupidly hard kind of pewter, my clippers have now clipped their last in trying to convert a mordian gunner into a tank commander.

I have a saw, but the wrong kind I think, anyways the clippers were pretty banged up anyways. I still can't believe all the heavy weapons teams I managed to get. 9 lascannons, 9 missile launchers, 3 autocannons, 3 heavy bolters and 6 mortars (only need 3 of those at this time though, but I will keep them, I bet the crews would look good on basilisks, and if I put pins in their feet they could do both). I certainly paid what they were worth though (which isn't bad, GW prices back when the offered them through the classic range)
