greetings, trying to get into the hobby!

oi ´umies!

i have been lurking around like a zombie for many years on several forums now, but i never registered at any.

i chose this one because the name is clearly the best, i mean there is never too much dakka and who doesnt love orks!

major interests: wargaming battle reports+news, horror movies, video games and asian girls! lol

i am actually quite the tabletop nerd, even though i barely purchased anything yet. been reading the Horus Heresy novels for ages and i was mostly interested in getting into WHFB but never committed and now its gone lol. i know about 9th Age though, i general read lots of tabletop news online and watch battle reports . just never buy anything. i guess many have been on the edge to buy something tabletop related in the past but always hesitated because of the prices so probably #relateable .

the purchases for tabletop gaming i have made in total come down to this:

- army painter black primer spray
- army painter most wanted brush set with a basecoat, insane detail and small drybrush
- plastic glue
- super glue
- measuring tape
- regular white GW dice cube
- blast and flame templates
- 1 box of Dark Elf Corsairs

so my first attempt at tabletop was the box of Dark Elf Corsairs. i was like "don't purchase an army before knowing how glueing the stuff together works" so i only got that. i felt like a goddamn slow, i took AGES to glue the 10 guys and in the end they did not even rank up, it looked like they tried tp punch each other out of the way. so i gave up on anything of it and stored the minis in a box to never have to look at them again. i was angry at myself because i thought there isnt much you can do wrong, which apparently IS the case, and then about the money spent. i seriously thought about just taking the box and throw it in the garbage. so this was my introduction to the tabletop lol.

i would say about myself that i might try playing either 8th WHFB or 9th Age in the future, primarily i plan on painting stuff and maybe get decent at it. so most important to me would be getting an army together which i like the look and fluff of, not that is necessarily super competitive and can wipe the floor with with super friends at adepticon

this was btw more than 3 years ago and i haven´t purchased anything related to tabletop stuff since then. the primer, and other things (except plastic glue of course) are still factory sealed, you might say mint condition...
i am looking for a way to get back into it with small purchases and not screw up the assembling in the end again! i seriously hate the assembling of miniatures though, its not fun at all!
i hope this serves well as an introduction , before closing it i have some questions though:

- does the black primer expire if it was never used? it´s ~3 years in a can laying around in some old shoebox without ever getting shaken around
- if i want to post a question on which models to get for, or about alternative models usage for dark elves aka fantasy themed tabletop models (preferable WHFB or 9th Age), which subforum do i visit?
- am i stupid, or did stuff like this happen to others when they started out too?

thx in advance and happy wargaming,
Maggotcarrier

Superglue will go hard after a while if it's left. Spray cans sometimes lose pressure over time meaning they won't spray properly but the paint itself shouldn't go bad. Plastic glue should be ok but the nozzle will probably be a bit clogged so you'll have to clean it out.

I would recommend investing in a set of files and a good pair of clippers, they will make your life a lot easier and improve the appearance of your finished model drastically.

Welcome to the Forums!

In answer to your questions:
- Primer shouldn't expire, but be sure to give it a good shake until you can hear the mixing bearing rattle around clearly, and test it on some plastic from the sprues of the models you have to be sure
- I'd go to the AoS General Discussion; it may be AoS now, but that doesn't mean people have no idea about Fantasy! Also it's worth noting that quite a few people still play 8th and haven't moved to AoS, so you can still find people willing to do that if you want to play it
- My first ever purchase was 20 Imperial Guardsman and a Chimera. Didn't actually start the hobby till about 2 years later. So yes, people do start slow, not that that is a problem

I'd say that if you're struggling to assemble your minis, just take your time with them and have patience; check the box art and models online to see how everything fits together (most manuals for infantry are pointless I find) and don't rush your work. A better assembled model that took 2 hours to put together is far and away better than 10 poor ones that took 30 minutes. Also consider getting some clippers and files to make cutting out the parts and cleaning them much easier for yourself

Other than that, don't worry if your modelling and painting skills aren't up to par with others around you - nobody started this hobby as a perfect painter!

Hope you enjoy your time on the forums, and as always, happy hunting!

G.A

Purchasing won't turn more or less costy as far as basic supplies, but as far as the minis, here I the way to go less expensive:

-Focus on second hand market.
-Play skirmish scale.
-Consider several games according to what your potential mates play or would play.
-Be sure whether you want to play sci-fi: historical is great too.

As far as painting and modelling, well, welcome to my fan club designed for poeple not able to do it propoerly but unlike me most finally get along very well.

Then, I wish you plenty of fun and luck comrade!
