Starting Eldar Corsairs, tricks and suggestions welcome

So I'm in the middle of building up an eldar corsairs army out of my love for dark eldar (but the hate of the massive nerfs).

I like to play competitively, and my meta is fairly mid-tier in the difficulty vs friendliness scale, but we still aim to win with whatever we bring.

That being said, I've had plans for an eldar force for some time and I finally have the time and funds to bring it to life. Originally I wanted an iyanden wraith theme, but that was before the newer codex dropped. I then wanted to focus on warp spiders, seeing the leaks for the new warp spider wraithknight, but thought against it as I looked deeper into the Corsairs. I used to play dark eldar in 5th when they were amazing, and slowly fell out of them and eventually sold them when they dropped duke sliscus and threw the codex into the ocean of nerfs.

Anyways, this is what I'm planning on building up to, if like a flyer, but nothing compares in my mind to the crimson hunter and if I can't have it, oh well.

2000 points Eldar Corsairs

Command Crew

Corsair Prince
- Corsair Jet Pack, Master-crafted Void Sabre, Shadow Field, Tanglefield Grenades, Voidplate Harness, Wild Psyker (Mastery Level 1)
-Collector of Ancient Treasures
-Cegorach's Rose

Corsair Void Dreamer
-Corsair Jet Pack, Master-crafted Void Sabre, 3x Mastery Level, Shadow Field, Voidplate Harness

Cotorie 1

Hate Bringers

Corsair Malevolent Band
-Corsair Jet Packs, 6x Corsair Malevolent w/ CCW and Pistols, Heavy Mesh Armour
-Corsair Malevolent w/ Venom Blade and Pistols

Corsair Hornet
-Corsair Kinetic Shroud
-2x Pulse Laser

Corsair Hornet
-Corsair Kinetic Shroud
-2x Pulse Laser

Corsair Fire Storm
-Corsair Kinetic Shroud
-Twin-linked Shuriken Catapult

Corsair Baron
-Heavy Mesh Armour, Master-crafted Void Sabre, Shadow Field, Tanglefield Grenades, Wild Psyker (level 1)
-Cloud Dancer
-Twin-linked Splinter Rifle

Corsair Cloud Dancer Band
3x Cloud Dancer w/ Splinter Cannon

Corsair Cloud Dancer Band
3x Cloud Dancer w/ Splinter Cannon

Corsair Cloud Dancer Band
3x Cloud Dancer w/ Splinter Cannon

Cotorie

Sky Burners

Corsair Hornet
-Corsair Kinetic Shroud
-2x Pulse Laser

Corsair Hornet
-Corsair Kinetic Shroud
-2x Pulse Laser

Corsair Warp Hunter
-Corsair Kinetic Shroud
-Splinter Cannon

Corsair Baron
-Heavy Mesh Armour, Master-crafted Void Sabre, Shadow Field, Tanglefield Grenades, Wild Psyker (level 1)
-Cloud Dancer
-Twin-linked Splinter Rifle

Corsair Cloud Dancer Band
3x Cloud Dancer w/ Splinter Cannon

Corsair Cloud Dancer Band
3x Cloud Dancer w/ Splinter Cannon

Corsair Cloud Dancer Band
3x Cloud Dancer w/ Splinter Cannon

So yeah, that's what I'm aiming for. I'm really peeved that the void dreamer isn't allowed to take a bike. That really irks me for some reason. So he and the prince will team up with the malevolent band and hopefully jump in my opponent's backline to wreak havoc and keep the enemy occupied while my hornets kill armor, the warp hunter kills the big nasties, the firestorm kills the fliers (hopefully), and the bikes run objectives and mow down infantry.

What have you found that works well in your lists? Anything you have faced that is trouble for Corsairs?

I am building my corsairs as well so its nice to see some discussion on them! So I will hand out my 2 cents for what its worth...

Mr ghoti wrote:

Command Crew

Corsair Prince
- Corsair Jet Pack, Master-crafted Void Sabre, Shadow Field, Tanglefield Grenades, Voidplate Harness, Wild Psyker (Mastery Level 1)
-Collector of Ancient Treasures
-Cegorach's Rose

Corsair Void Dreamer
-Corsair Jet Pack, Master-crafted Void Sabre, 3x Mastery Level, Shadow Field, Voidplate Harness

I personally don't see the point in running the rose and the void sabre - I would rather have the mask of secrets. Fearless is a massive boon for corsairs and the MC sabre will work just fine. I would also not bother with the sabre on the void dreamer - his witch staff is fine.

Mr ghoti wrote:

Cotorie 1

Hate Bringers

Corsair Malevolent Band
-Corsair Jet Packs, 6x Corsair Malevolent w/ CCW and Pistols, Heavy Mesh Armour
-Corsair Malevolent w/ Venom Blade and Pistols

Corsair Hornet
-Corsair Kinetic Shroud
-2x Pulse Laser

Corsair Hornet
-Corsair Kinetic Shroud
-2x Pulse Laser

Corsair Fire Storm
-Corsair Kinetic Shroud
-Twin-linked Shuriken Catapult

Corsair Baron
-Heavy Mesh Armour, Master-crafted Void Sabre, Shadow Field, Tanglefield Grenades, Wild Psyker (level 1)
-Cloud Dancer
-Twin-linked Splinter Rifle

Corsair Cloud Dancer Band
3x Cloud Dancer w/ Splinter Cannon

Corsair Cloud Dancer Band
3x Cloud Dancer w/ Splinter Cannon

Corsair Cloud Dancer Band
3x Cloud Dancer w/ Splinter Cannon

Hate Bringers are awesome! The Malevolent are only OK... and you really need to run them maxed out model wise because despite 2 wounds, T3 hurts bad. The hornets are gold. Pure gold.

The firestorm I love as a model (I have 2!) but when it comes to utility and AA - go with the nightwing. Its far more flexible and more dangerous. At 2k, its no issue having it off the table turn 1. I would move it to the sky burners though to ensure its arrival.

The baron should be using a venom blade - his S3 is not helping much for the void sabre. The wounds get piled on with the venom blade. Also - the las blasters are best on the bike. The brace of pistols does the same thing as the shuriken catapults and the splinter pistols.

The cloud dancers - sadly - should only ever get scatter lasers or dark lances and even then... scatter lasers win out. Splinter cannons inability to hurt armour is the reason DE suffer so much in competitive play!

Mr ghoti wrote:

Cotorie

Sky Burners

Corsair Hornet
-Corsair Kinetic Shroud
-2x Pulse Laser

Corsair Hornet
-Corsair Kinetic Shroud
-2x Pulse Laser

Corsair Warp Hunter
-Corsair Kinetic Shroud
-Splinter Cannon

Corsair Baron
-Heavy Mesh Armour, Master-crafted Void Sabre, Shadow Field, Tanglefield Grenades, Wild Psyker (level 1)
-Cloud Dancer
-Twin-linked Splinter Rifle

Corsair Cloud Dancer Band
3x Cloud Dancer w/ Splinter Cannon

Corsair Cloud Dancer Band
3x Cloud Dancer w/ Splinter Cannon

Corsair Cloud Dancer Band
3x Cloud Dancer w/ Splinter Cannon

Most of what I said earlier applies here - the cloud dancers and baron as well as the hornets. The warp hunter needs a friend. 1 of them without the magic 6 result is just not reliable against most targets. 2 of them putting out 2+2d3 templates spells the end of most targets. Also - splinter cannon should not be there - again, shuriken is better.

Just my 2 cents so far - keen to hear your experiences in games!

Why the Voidplate Harness's? Sure you get a 3+ armour save but you lose fleet in the process and already have a 2+ invuln from the Shadowfield making it kind of redundant. The Heavy Mesh Armour is redundant on all the units you've given them to as well, both the Cloud Dancer and Corsair Jet Pack give the models a +1 to their armour saves so your spending 10pts per model to give 4+ armour to models that already have 4+ armour.

With the points saved from dropping the armour you can boost the Malevelant squad to 10.

I agree with Massaen on dropping the Firestorm, you'll struggle taking down Space Mareen flyers with that, a Nightwing has soom good firepower and is nearly a match for the Crimson Hunter in that respect, though you'd need to group up a couple of the Hornets to make space for it.

Personally I favour Reaper of the Outer Dark as my Princes trait, it could mesh well with Hate Bringer as well.

I figured out a lot of the problems and that list, and moved some units around to make room for a full Malevolent Squad. I'm most likely dropping The Firestorm for right now. I don't necessarily need a flyer, or Anti air support unless I go to a tournament. Our matches are almost decided ahead of time, and we agree that if one person does not have flyers for a way to deal with them, then no one brings them. Fairly casual. In a tournament setting, I will definitely make room for something, but for right now, I'll just do this.

the main reason for all of the Master-Crafted void sabres on everything was for unit symmetry, and an overall theme. The way I'm going to be modeling these characters will be fairly uniform, and their unique weapon would make more sense if all models had it the same.

I swapped around the malevolent band to have 6 normal guys and 4 venom blades. I dropped the heavy mesh armor, and dropped the fire storm entirely. The Barron characters have master crafted venom blades instead now, the tangle field grenades have been moved to the void dreamer, who has Mastercrafted his witch staff, and the Prince has taken a dissonance pistol. He has also swapped the Rose for the mask of Secrets.

I kept my for Hornets because they are what made me fall in love with Eldar in the first place, and kept the Splinter cannons on the cloud dancer units to keep points low, and because I miss Dark Eldar. I personally love the idea of throwing down that many poisoned shots. I'm not worried about armor, my Hornets and warp Hunter can help with that.

I wasn't suggesting to drop any of the Hornets, they're pure gold, but squadron them instead. Since you don't intend to run a flyer on a regular basis it wont make any difference but it does give you options for the future.

I've been on the receiving end of 5 Cloud Dancers with Splinter Cannons and prescience cast on them, it took down a Talos from a Corpsthiefe Claw with Dark Artisan back up in a single turn and given how tough those Talos are that was quite impressive. Given that Corsairs have far more access to anti-tank weapons than Dark Eldar do, going Splinter Cannon on the bikes is not a problem.

Void dreamer being allowed a bike would be so nice. A possibility of instead of fusion guns (6" melta range), you could go with blasters for 18" Lance. It allows you some mobility, and allows you to play blasters in the back letting regular reavers take hits using them as ablative wounds.

Also I'm a big fan of regular corsairs using Brace of Pistols. Gives them +1 attack in the off chance they get charged, and gurantees you being within 12" to make use of Reckless Abandon. Also, with Shuriken pistols being atleast str 4, allows you to threaten armor from behind, along with your blasters/fusion guns, whereas Lasblasters are just 3 shot lasguns.

That's a great point. I just don't like the possibility of having to model all of those pistols. I know in the rules they don't require you to model them, but I think it would look weird having a bunch of Jetpack guys with no weapons. So I might just model them with las blasters or something and say they have pistols. I hadn't thought about the blasters in the units yet, but from what I've played through Dark Eldar, and having three units of trueborn four Blaster units, I am still very underwhelmed with how they perform.
On the note of the pistols, is there any reason to take anything other than brace of pistols for a basic corsair weapon? The Lasblasters were my go-to gun in the 1st edition list as they paired nicely with shuriken cannons in the basic corsair squads, but now I have a hard time finding a place for them on anything but the noses of Falcons and Vypers and as ablative wounds in a Baelstrike squad.

The reavers take special weapons which are mostly 12" or less range, which kind of negates the range of the lasblaster. Maybe if you have blasters...but I'd rather have fusion.

The shuricat is the same as a brace without the +1 Attack.

The splinter rifle gets a single poisoned shot at 24", but loses the ability to assault after shooting, and the +1 attack of the venom pistols.

And as far as modelling the pistols, it's super easy with either the storm guardians upgrade kit from GW (which gets you more fusion and flamer too) or just buying the DE Wyches CCW and pistol bits from an eBay seller.

I believe it specifies that only a shadowseer has ACCESS to it. The prince may still take it, as his rule supersedes that. It specifies that he may take ANY of the purchasable relics.

Blasters are nice for elites. I mostly wound up using my blaster born units for grey knight terminator hunting anyways. But I need tank killing in the 2nd list more than infantry killing. There's so much else that could do that in there.

Now the 1st list I'm not so sure about, but I could just begin the slow collecting process for the infantry as well as the vehicles... Might just start with the infantry. It's the harder of the two for me to finish.

The heads I'm wanting to use for my army are the helmeted dark eldar venom pilot heads.

I actually just wrote about this and generally agree - brace of pistols is almost always the way to go. I do like the las blaster for units who will lurk back field on objectives so they can still contribute some fire.

http://objectivesecured.com.au/fw-eldar-corsair-troops-review-part-4/
