Please help me create my Daemons for Dummies cue cards

I'm going to openly admit I don't understand 40K very well. It doesn't stick in my brain, and I haven't retained much more than turn sequences and BS rules.
After 18 months my standard gaming bag contains handmade, clearly printed stat cards on a keyring so I can quickly refer to them and hand them to my opponent if they don't know my units.
I keep the hit/wound charts as part of that because they have never registered in my brain.

My query is, if I want to make some more cards for my daemon army, I know there are more stages... How many layers of stuff would need noting?

I'm going to play purely Slaanesh daemons with one CSM sorcerer and his 10 cultist buddies.

So assuming I have my printed hit-wound chart..
I'd need another for the warp storm table.
And one for each type of daemonic reward.
And a visual marker on each stat card with the type of reward tables to roll on..
One for icons and instruments?

I know I'm very likely forgetting something here.

Daemons were not a good army for someone like me, but I so very much love painting them. :(

A simple way to always remember what you need to roll to wound is reduce the number needed to succeed by 1 for each point of strength you have over the target's toughness, and increase it for every point below, starting from 4 (e.g. Target is T4, S is 5 = 3+ to wound, or T is 4, S is 3 = 5+ to wound). You also know you can't wound a target if your weapon strength is at least 4 points below the target's toughness, so S3 can't wound T7, S4 can't wound T8, and so on and so on.

Hope that helps you memorise them

As for Daemons, I haven't played against them since 6th ed, but I would just take the statlines for each unit you have, plus the special rules you mentioned; mark each unit card with something like an asterix if a certain faction rule applies to them, such as daemonic reward, and then have daemonic reward as a separate card. Also any odd equipment you're struggling with you can bung in below the unit cards

I also have this app called Rules40K on Android - it has quick references to rules both from the core book and codecies from A-Z, and includes a search bar for quick acquisition. Might be worth checking out

Hope this helps!

G.A

Yeesh.

Daemons are the bureaucrats army! All the paperwork was a contributory factor in me taking a hiatus from the game entirely.

But yeah, you'll need
- Gifts (Greater, Lesser, Exalted)
- Possibly the Slaanesh lot too (if you're using the Fenris expansion/Incursion codex)
- Psychic Powers (again possible extras if using the supplements)
- Warp Storm
- Loci

The most complex issue I can see for you is that the gifts and powers will change every game and may well duplicate over multiple units depending on your list, so some sort of method of keeping track of which unit has which combination of powers etc

I just used paper and pen, but even then it is sooo easy to overlook, or mentally exchange who's got what (especially with Heralds) so if you're organised enough to make cue cards, I'd see if you can make something maybe a bit more visual to help with that.

Sorry General, I should've mentioned I have memory damage, but it sounds like just making excuses. I had a couple of very long operations as a teenager (9hrs each), and since the anesthetic, I can't do mathematics or remember things much better than a pre-teen.
I appreciate your efforts to help me remember though!

Azrael, if I'm keeping the points (and number of gifts) standard, then it should be a *little* simpler?
I'm not using the new released things because I have enough to remember as of yet.

Hell you could even photocopy it; I don't know how big or small you like your reference cards, but it'd certainly save some space on your unit cards.

Again I don't have much knowledge on Daemons anymore, but have you considered colour coding your cards for quicker reference? I.e. have you tried coding them according to whether they're unit stats, faction rules and special equipment?

I also knew a guy who had a "streamlined" codex - all he did was put copies of the reference sheet and profiles for units he used into a folder and carried that around, along with faction rules and warlord trait tables at the front. Perhaps you could try that

One thing that might help is a record sheet you can fill in with all the random rolls you make (gifts/powers/etc) If you have a more-or-less set army, or just field your units the same every time, you could even put a picture of your own minis on the sheet, so you can remember who has what.

You could then have reference cards for each gift/power, or a printed list you reference.

I use a program called Magic Set Editor to help make my own play aids. Handy for things like warlord traits, or all the one use doctrines. When I use those, I can just toss the card back into my bag.

Thinking of cards and demons, who have all sorts of random things, you could use something like a card binder page, that holds 9 cards. Use some of the slots for stats, and some you can tuck the powers you rolled into. Basically turn it into a build-you-own character sheet.

I use these for my guard.

I could put them on a 9 card page, but where I play, table space is non existent. So I tend to wear these on a lanyard.

There's a few more psychic powers in the mix, but the new gifts are bought and paid for with points, not generated by buying rolls on a table each game. Optimally you'd probably use both, as the new God specific gifts just require the unit to be allowed to buy gifts, they don't use up the points allocation, but, for simplicity, avoiding the random stuff altogether might be worth it. You can't even say you're hamstringing yourself, because you could roll utter gak for the opponent you're facing and be better off spending the points on something else in the first place!

Also, should you go for the classic D6 generated gifts, be aware that you generate all the gifts then choose which to trade in for the 0 result (if any.) I was well into my daemon career before I realised you don't generate them one at a time and decide as you go, like you do with psychic powers.
