Vidrian is the name, mean and green is my game!

Hey all!

With my current forum burning out I started looking for a new place to post my progress.
And since you guys are apparently the most active forum out in the web right now and your name is ork related It seems fitting to join DakkaDakka!

A “little” about myself!

I am and always have been “Vidrian” when online, 28 year old and living in the Netherlands with a girlfriend and two cats in the great city of Den Bosch and working as designer for a big dutch IT company. And here is my hobby history!
(Warning, wall of text incoming)

I’ve been playing with *ahum* “Plastic wardollies” since I was 10 or 12, got a unit of Warhammer 40k Assault marines and Terminators for “Christmas” (Sinterklaas which is basically the same thing).
Painting marines as spacewolves kept me busy for a couple of years, although after a few years all I had to show was 30-40 marines and one of those ugly old school rhino’s (never even finished those terminators)

In highschool I got my hands on Imperial guards…and went nuts…After a few years I had almost 200 guards/tanks and whatnots painted and ready for a fight. But I almost never did, the rules of 40k had me intimidated and the people at GW truly scared me of what I could become…
So being bored with painting guardsmen I started trying different 40k factions, some Tau, some orks, and back to marines. And found myself a friend would helpt me understand the rules and played some games.

It wasn’t until college that I started getting really comfortable with the hobby. Got a roommate into playing and together we did the “dance of familiar opponents”. He would paint some, I would paint some, we would play and one would loose…big time. We switched systems and that's how I got into Warhammer fantasy.

This was around the time that Chaos got divided as a faction, and feeling uncomfortable painting flesh I went straight for the most armored faction I could find….Warriors of chaos…I painted about 200pts out of a undercoated 1000pts army. I started going to a nearby gaming club playing games…but got beaten almost every time and lost interest in the army…

I was around 20 years old and had an epiphany…Warhammer was not at all balanced. I sold my chaos warriors an decided to find a faction that is fun and random instead of strong. Orcs and goblins.
This was a great army to paint and play! Painted Orcs and goblins started rolling from a factory line, put them on the field and started throwing dice and lost almost every game. But it was always incredibly fun! With the addition of a long mordheim campaign that lasted for almost 2-3 years the greenskinz kept on growing.

But I was missing competition, and since my roommate had jumped to Warmachine and showed me the insane amount of tactics, possibilities and “balance” in that game, I decided to pick it up as well. I traded my entire Imperial guard army for a large amount of secondhand Cryx.
Warmachine as a game showed me what competitive games should be like; adaptable, flexible army lists and synergy. My Cryx received all my attention, the ruling of Warhammer disgusted me (althought the models always had my preference). I quickly sold the warriors of chaos and got addicted to buying secondhand Cryx and painting most of them.

The games with Cryx were fun, the faction was somewhat on the top of the ladder in my meta and I quickly got the hang of all the nasty tricks that I could pull with them. I wouldn’t call myself a good player, but I wasn’t the worst anymore either.
During this time I also found a nice group of guys and started playing Pathfinder or D&D, to lose my roleplaying itch that was missing in warmachine.
After graduation I moved to a different city with my girlfriend. Found a warmachine community and started playing more. The army was growing and I was improving my painting skills, going to my first tournaments and having a lot of fun.

But then…Age of Sigmar happened

Ow my Gork (or possible Mork) this game was what Warhammer fantasy could never be for me…FUN! I dusted of my old orcs and goblins, decided that I didn’t like their scheme anymore and started creating a new army AoS style!
This was one year ago and since then I painted 150+ greenskinz and still going strong every week. I’ve convincing fantasy players in the area that AoS is not horrible bad, but amazingly fun if done right. Playing games with custom scenario’s and roleplaying, teaching the rules to players young and old.

Man that was fun to write up…the memories.

Here a picture of 15+ of painting
From top to bottom:
Second hand unpainted Cryx
Cryx
AoS greenskinz
Fantasy greenskinz
Mordheim
40k Spacemarines, Orks, Tau and Necromunda warband

Vid.
