Seven Years of Neglect - "The Fetters Will Be Broken" (Blood Rage)

With the announcement and teasing of Rising Sun, I decided that it was high time I actually got around to painting up the fruits of the original collaboration between Eric Lang, Adrian Smith, and Studio McVey; Blood Rage. In recognition of the 7th Anniversary of the day I signed up to Dakka, it seemed fitting that I make a blog here to motivate myself (and finally start giving back to the community/making amends for the atrocity that was the younger me).

A bit of background here. I started wargaming with the highly neglected Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game with a box of Uruk-hai Warriors and WD341, May 2008. Chaos Daemons had just been updated, Robin Cruddace had just joined the team at Games Workshop, and sitting in the back pages of my very first White Dwarf was the Advance Order announcement for the game-changing Citadel Washes. Oh, how far we've come. What followed in the years to come was an incredibly eclectic purchasing pattern, bouncing from army to army, system to system, spending a lot of time and money, but never on the right units to play and never for long enough to get anything done before I was off again. Eventually I dropped the farce of being a "wargamer" and settled for calling myself a collector and a painter. So while Blood Rage is the project of the hour, there is also a fairly sizable assortment of miniatures I’ve collected and neglected over the years. Ideally you’ll see them all at one stage or another in the not-too-distant future as I finally wade through the muck and clear out my backlog. For organization’s sake, I’ll try to break these down into groups.

Unopened, Unassembled, Un-primed:
- Slaaneshi/Undivided Warriors of Chaos (28 miniatures)
- Space Wolves (46 miniatures)
- Isengard Uruk-hai (53 miniatures)
- Grey Knights (6 miniatures)
- Malifaux Outcasts (Hired Swords & Hired Guns, 14 miniatures)
- Raging Heroes’ Iron Empire (Mostly characters, 16 miniatures)
- Kingdom Death Black Knight & Squire
- Scibor Valentine’s Day Special Dwarf

Light Rescue & Repair:
- Space Hulk (35 miniatures, if I recall correctly)
- Easterlings (20 miniatures)
- Lizardmen (17 miniatures)
- The Hobbit: Escape From Goblin Town (Careless and lazily painted, deserves better, 56 miniatures)

Heavy Rescue & Repair:
- Tyranids (Don’t even know how many, can’t be bothered finding them all just to count)
- Space Marines (A lot. Got them in a trade, dirt cheap. Given the condition, should have just bought dirt, in hindsight)
- Orks (Assault on Black Reach mob. I was 12 at the time. You get the picture. 29 miniatures)
- The Mines of Moria (Might need to replace the Fellowship altogether. Lowest priority)

So as you can clearly see, I have no self-control, no willpower, and no money.

There are also a fair few other odds and ends that I couldn't bother counting, but the body count must sit somewhere between 600-650. A decent number, no doubt, but with the amount of money I've sunk into the hobby over the years, I was honestly expecting more. Must be living in denial, I suppose.

As for the matter at hand, it’s a bit of a task ahead of me. Some 88 miniatures, ranging from dwarves to giants, and all of them beautiful sculpts, I’m more than a little spoiled for choice with what to start first. To solve this problem, I’ve decided to do them in numerical order, based on the sculpt number printed into the bases. This leaves me with 46 steps, in a manner of speaking, to complete the job. A little intimidating, but nothing that can’t be overcome with a bit of blood, sweat, and tears. Emphasis on the latter especially, given that during preliminary colour tests I discovered I am NOT a fan of painting fur. And there is a lot of fur to be painted.

I’d like to keep this blog as up-to-date as life permits, but failing that I’ll make sure there’s at least one photo update per week (when possible).

First (Fur-st?) up are the Bear Clan, the biggest and beefiest of the bunch. Made a start to the basing and furs, as my technique for those involves a lot of drybrushing.

A couple of model shots here too

All in all, very good quality miniatures. There's a recurring theme of painfully placed mold lines throughout the range, but nothing too bad here. The worst struck areas are probably the hammer details on the first lot of warriors, and the braided sword hilt on the second. Ideally I'll be able to mask it with some paint and a few illusionary tricks.

And a bit of a tease regarding what's to come...

Thanks for having a look, hope you'll stick around as the work continues.

Cheers,
Tim the Biovore / Timbo
