I had the thought that running squads of 5 allow you to get more special weapons per person, but i'm not sure of any of the other benefits/disadvantage that squad sizes give.

If you are just playing casual games, I use the troops as my fill in points. Vanguard however I am nigh in love with. As to size it's purely if they're getting special weapons. Arc rifles I'll min to hide in terrain until I can hopefully get them close enough to hurt some armor. Plasmas I'll rarely take as they're really just ok at priority deleting of tougher units.
