Unusual question about terrain and cover

Can't seem to find anything on the subject in the rulebook but if I have a unit of say 10 marines in a TS in some woods which are mounted on a board shooting at some hormagaunts and some of the marines are further back in the woods and have their own woods partially blocking the view of some of the hormagaunts do the hormaguants get a cover save from the woods? And conversely if they were say like 5 trees on small bases to stand them up but it wasn't area terrain would the rules be any different? If you don't understand what I'm asking I can draw up a diagram or take a photo of what I mean

Unusual question about terrain and cover

Does 7th use area terrain? If so, no...as figures in area terrain can see if they are 2" from the edge.

If true-line-of-sight? Probably...because that's dumb for a large scale wargame.

Re:Unusual question about terrain and cover

I'd would say if the marines are in cover and the nids are not, the nids do not get a cover save. However, if there is a marine that cannot see the nids that model cannot fire. Trees generally have a lot of open space (leaves, branches, etc) so the unit can see the target 99.9% of the time in my experience. And if you set the trees up like in the second question I would count a unit in between as having a cover save.

Unusual question about terrain and cover

'Area terrain' isn't strictly defined in the 40k rules. The way I usually run forests and such models inside them ignore the terrain when shooting.
