Relations with the Imperial Guard?

Hi guys I was wondering if anyone well verse in the novels or lore in general would be able to elaborate on how the Imperial Guard and Space Marines interact if ever and what the view of them is? I was curious particular about Dark Angels, Blood Angels, and their relationship if any with the guard. It seems like everyone fears or hates the Inquisition though lol.

Relations with the Imperial Guard?

Please report all individuals you're aware of fearing or hating the Inquisition to their nearest commissar for required blamming....

In all seriousness tho, to most guard space marines are often seen as literal angels of death. Most will never have seen one, most likely being views as a myth or legend and would be in awe of them if they simply met someone who claimed to have seen or fought beside them. Some marines treat basic humans well, other see them a serfs and some even see them as little better than cannon fodder, it depends on the individual chapter and guard troops in question.

Concerning your last sentence, I dunno what you mean, everyone loves the Inquisition!!! However it does depend on the amount of brainwashing. Some would see, being killed by a Commissar for example as their own fault, other like Catachans for example would see them as busy body good for nothings!

Varies by Chapter. Some seem to think they're pretty weak seeing as they die so easily. Some admit they're pretty brave to face the horrors of 40k with no worthwhile armour or guns to speak of.

Re:Relations with the Imperial Guard?

As always, there's too many people to say bluntly how this chapter and that react to guardsmen. See DoW 2, in the 4 sergeants you have 1 who despises them, one who genuinely likes them and 2 who respect them but consider themselves above them and are entirely fine with leaving them against impossible odds.
In general though, we know that:

Marines Malevolent: The quintessential arseholes. I don't think you can get worse then them.
Salamanders: The other end of the scale. Just looking through the salamanders trilogy you see their complete respect for the guardsmen. In one of them a bunch of marines mainly preoccupied with falling to what they think is their deaths take the time to grab the squishy humans and shield them with their armour as best they can.
Ultramarines: My opinion is that the genuinely admire their courage and will assume the best of them, but they will also expect you to step up and hold the line at a moments notice. Oh, and to follow their orders regardless of the chain of command.
Iron Hands: Use them, do not entirely loathe them, but they are flesh and therefore weak. Wrath of Iron (I think) has a subplot with the guardsmen struggling to deal with the callousness of the IH's.

Sadly, I don't own the BA/DA books so I can't advise on them specifically.

As far as guard interactions go, again remember the colossal differences in the worlds. A agri-world trooper would quite possibly faint if a Marine appeared before him. A Cadian, who from birth is taught about CSM and how to kill them will be far more aware of a Marine's mortality and less overawed (If I was a Cadian I would probably be more than a little resentful). A veteran unit fighting for their lives and then rescued is both going to be less overawed and far more respected by the SM's themselves than a green bunch of recruits.

Relations with the Imperial Guard?

I know the Blood Angels have excellent relationship with at least one regiment of Tempestus Scion that participated as scouts and drop troopers in various battle with their 3rd Company. In general, Space Marines seems to have an excellent working relationship with Scion regiments and great respect for their skills and training.

On the other end, their relationship with guardsmen seems to vary tremendously depending on the guardsmen regiment and homeworld. Technically the level of training, specialisation and experience varies enormously between Guard regiments, much more than in any other institution. Some are so good they are nearly at par with Scions, while other can barely shoot a lasgun and stand in line. I guess this affect a lot their relationship. A Space Marine might have a much better relationship with elite guardsmen than with conscript penal troopers for exemple.

Relations with the Imperial Guard?

There are some Chapters like the Flesh Tearers that no one in their right mind would want to fight alongside. Too much Black Rage and Red Thirst causing collateral damage there. When even Orks if not outright rout then at least decide to go find a different fight you know there's something seriously wrong.

And some like the aforementioned Marines Malevolent think nothing of deliberately causing collateral damage if it kills the enemy too. A guard regiment that doesn't fear them is either DKoK level fanatics or green recruits from some backwater.

On the other end of the scale you have Salamanders who will try to preserve human life even if they have to risk themself, or Space Wolves that will regard those skilled and brave in battle as worthy warriors (even if not marines).

Re:Relations with the Imperial Guard?

Thanks all, I should check out some of the Blood Angels novels and such. I am currently playing through Warhammer 40K Space Marines on Steam too.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Basically the three chapters that I like and want to build up are Blood Angels/Grey Knights Inquisition/Dark Angels. I think especially the Grey Knight/BA combo will work particularly well together and someone on the FB group has said it has been doing really well for them. I do like the stuff around the Salamanders too but I was trying to keep myself to three chapters for collecting atm haha. I also have an Imp Knight Warden box on the way I plan to fully magnetize and pimp out. My good friend who is now my neighbor plays Imp Guard and has a huge mech army, lots of tanks. I was trying to come up with some lore or fluff reasons why would be fighting alongside each other if we went to a store for a larger game.

I don't think you need to stretch to hard to find a fluffy reason for IG and SM to be fighting together. The SM are the scalpel to the IG broadsword. The SM could be helping hold a super critical point on the line or deep striking behind the enemy to open up the way for a general advance.

Relations with the Imperial Guard?

Some Space marine chapters see the Imperial Guard as cannon fodder or an impingement on the Space Marines' fighting ability.

Others, such as the Ultramarines and Space Wolves see them as a brave bulwark against the tide of Xenos and Chaos enemy. Holding back the bulk of the enemy , allowing the Space Marines to strike with precise scalpel like deployments rather than spreading themselves thinly to deal with all the incursions themselves.
