Imp Gunship

Alright, simply put I want a new Imp flier. Specifically, I want a gunship. No troop transport at all. Further, I want all of its weapons to be on one side, lets say the port side. I want all the weapons on the port side. And I mean a lot of weapons; Leman Russ Battle Canon, Twin-Linked Punisher Canon, and a Twined-Linked Lascnon at the least; though, I would prefer more. I want it to have heavy armour, like 13 on the front and the side. I want it to be big, the model should be at least half again as large as a Valkyrie, if not twice the size. I do not want it to be able to hover, instead I want a special rule: "Fly Slow; at the start of his movement phase the player can declare that this unit is flying slow, if he does so the unit must move at least 9 inches, but no more than 17 inches. The unit loses the ability to jink while Flying Slow." Or something to that affect. I want it to have at least 3, if not 4 hull point. I want it to be able to split fire, or have some special rule similar to split fire where the two units it is firing at cant be greater than X number of inches away from each other. And I want it to be exclusive to the Imperial Guard. (I'm a Guard player, could you tell?) Essentially, I want one of these:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lockheed_AC-130

To fly along the edge of my table and just rain down pain on the enemies of the Emperor. Any thoughts? Oh yeah, bs would be 3, 'cause guards. And I know that there is the Marauder, but that is more akin to a B-25 than a C-130 Gunship. The ability to strafe would allow it to place ordnance on the same target for more than one turn at a time, and allows the player to be not as concerned with where it is going or flying off the table which I see as just distracting from the game. Any ways, thanks for reading, let me know what you think.

Or in universe, the Gothic Battleships? Just because something is old is no reason to remove it from service, but only if it cannot do its job anymore.

Frankly, it wouldn't happen in universe for any number of reasons. For starters, it requires a landing strip, while basilisk batteries could unass from their transports and be put immediately into service.

It would be Imperial Navy not Guard.

Also the Marauder Variants pretty much do this

If GW did as you suggest you know it would be Marines who get it

Imp Gunship

Point one: This is going to be a superheavy, no way around it. As a superheavy it's got 6+ hull points (probably 9) and can split fire without penalty regardless.

Point two: Keeping ordnance on target for multiple turns is easy enough with the standard Flyer rules. Making up a 'semi-hover-mode' rule is complication that doesn't really help, to my mind; either give it Hover Mode or don't.

Point three: AV13 is an absolute no. AV12 on a Flyer is already ridiculously overarmoured; until 5e's pack of extra-fast Fast Skimmers got turned into Flyers in 6th the only place AV12 existed on Flyers at all was on the Thunderhawk. The excessive amount of AV12 Flyers now is a major source of problems for scaling in the first place.

(From an analogy standpoint the Avenger is an A-10 in space and it's only 12-10-10)

So from that we've got a superheavy, probably 9HP, probably AV 12-11-11 (about the same size as a Marauder, given that the Marauder is the chassis the Navy's EWACS plane is built on). With weapons coming out of a central bay it's going to need to be a different hull than the Marauder, wings higher and further back. I'd suggest trying to make it more self-sufficient in final loadout than a real AC-130 is, this vehicle isn't going to be able to rely on coordinated fighter cover or air superiority to anywhere near the level the modern U.S. military can put out. With that in mind let's say it's carrying twin-linked autocannon turrets on both sides just aft of the cockpit and one at the tail for point-defense, then looking at the AC-130's main bay let's call it a battle cannon and an Avenger bolt cannon firing out one side. For a dedicated ground-attack aircraft I could see giving it Strafing Run; I know the Marauder Destroyer doesn't have it, but the Marauder Destroyer is also a copy-paste of a cost and statline that haven't been updated since 3rd edition, so.

So the end result:
Marauder Spectre (name is tentative)
BS 3, AV 12-11-11, HP 9.
Super-Heavy Flyer (or Super-Heavy Flyer (Hover)
Special Rules: Strafing Run
Wargear: Three twin-linked sponson-mounted autocannon (one on each side and one at the tail). One sponson-mounted battle cannon and one sponson-mounted Avenger bolt cannon, both on the same side of the aircraft (choose when assembling the model).
Options: Items from the Imperial Navy upgrade list (standard Armoured Cockpit, Flare/Chaff Launcher, Infra-Red Targeting, Ilum Flares, Distinctive Paint Scheme).

My best guess on pricing puts this around 400-450pts, available as a Lords of War choice to an Imperial Guard, Elysian, or Krieg list.

Automatically Appended Next Post:

Crabbit wrote:
I like your idea. As written you could just go take a Thunderhawk for your Guard army in the first place.

Automatically Appended Next Post:

KayTwo wrote:
...The ability to strafe would allow it to place ordnance on the same target for more than one turn at a time, and allows the player to be not as concerned with where it is going or flying off the table which I see as just distracting from the game...

As a longtime Inquisitorial/D99 massed Valkyrie player I can reassure you that 'not flying off the table' becomes routine and easy to plan pretty quickly with the normal Flyer rules. A 6'x4' table is bigger than you think, especially when you can turn easily enough to describe an 18" square in the middle of it.
