House Rules for Kill Team

Okay, so I'm going to start running Kill Team events at my LGS. Not tournaments or anything yet, really just being the guy that makes a day for people to meet and play Kill Team on a regular basis. But there are some things that the ruleset kind of glosses over or doesn't cover, or just things that don't seem to work right in the format. So I'm working on getting some house rules down. Not to nerf or buff anything, although that might happen. It's more to make sure that everyone is playing the same game at each table. So two people playing the same unit aren't playing it differently. The goal is to be consistent and easy to understand. So I'm looking for feedback on this list - it's really just a dump of ideas at this point, definitely a rough draft. Any ideas on changes or additions are very much appreciated, thanks! Also if you think something should be ruled a different way, let me know! Even if I don't change it before we start playing at the store, if something seems too weak or too strong these can be revised!

Leader Trait: Leader traits will not be rolled. Select a Leader trait for your Kill Team! If playing Infiltrate the Camp, select another trait.

Relics: Relics may not be purchased for members of your Kill Team. This includes army-specific Relic Equivalents. (Edit: This might not be needed, I'd just rather not deal with some people being able to use relics and some not - but the ones that can might not be too crazy, I'm not sure)

Wargear purchased by a single model in a unit that normally affects the whole unit only affects the model that holds it. (Edit: Things like upgrades for sergeant-style characters that affect the whole unit would now only affect them since they're a separate unit)

Missions:

Alone in the Dark – Models may not start in transports for this mission.
Infiltrate the Camp – If the Attacker has no models on the battlefield at the end of any game turn, but had at least one unit leave the board via the Breakthrough mission special rule, points are totaled and a winner is determined as though the game ended normally.

Adepta Sororitas:
Each model counts as its own unit for purposes of Acts of Faith.

Necrons:
Shields Down – Quantum Shielding is not in effect for Kill Team missions. (Edit: Could be it just works on front armor instead or something)

Tau:
DS8 Tactical Support Turret – Select one model from the squad that purchased this upgrade. That model is the unit that the Turret belongs to and references within its special rules.
Drones included as wargear entries in a unit’s datasheet do not count toward minimum model count for Kill team.

Space Marines:
Cluster Mines – Only one piece of terrain may be booby trapped per purchase of this upgrade. (Edit: This is how I think I should start it, but as long as we use a lot of terrain, each scout biker can probably get away with marking a separate terrain piece without it getting too out of hand)

Eldar:
Guardian Heavy Weapons Platform - Select one model from the squad that purchased this upgrade. That model is the unit that the Heavy Weapon Platform belongs to and references within its special rules. (Edit: This was to remain consistent with the Tau turret, but it makes it so that there's a unit of 2 models, so I'm not sure on this. We don't want to straight up disallow models though, so I would prefer a solution that still lets people bring these somehow.)

Also, this is my first time doing stuff like this, and I'm still fairly new to 40k, so please help me make sure I can make this a fun experience for everyone. That's the most important part!

Edited with additional thoughts.

Because the Eldar weapons platform works differently from the Tau one - it's a model that can be attacked, can move, etc - just count it as its own unit, but can't fire unless another Guardian is within 2", say.

For Necrons, you probably don't need that: anything with Quantum Shielding either has 4HP or is a Heavy Support or HQ unit, and therefore can't be taken anyway.

jade_angel wrote:
Because the Eldar weapons platform works differently from the Tau one - it's a model that can be attacked, can move, etc - just count it as its own unit, but can't fire unless another Guardian is within 2", say.

This was actually my first idea, and I might change it back to that because with how it's worded, that made more sense to me, I just didn't want it to seem too much better than alternatives. Plus doing it the way I currently am gives the attached model T5 (because there's two infantry models - you pick which stat you want to use in the case of a tie, right?) and relentless. Another consideration I had was even though it's listed as infantry, make it stationary and one guardian that's within 2" can fire it, but it can't move. Either of those ways we run into a problem with the "remove this as a casualty if all the guardians in its unit die" part of its rules, but that can probably be forgiven in this format.

For Necrons, you probably don't need that: anything with Quantum Shielding either has 4HP or is a Heavy Support or HQ unit, and therefore can't be taken anyway.

Ah! You're right mostly, I didn't realize the ghost ark has 4hp. That still leaves the Triarch Stalker, which battlescribe is showing me has 3hp. I'd be slightly less concerned about it if the stalker wasn't a walker and got to use its quantum shielding in close combat. Maybe just deactivate it for close combat?

Thanks for your feedback! Gave me stuff to think about

The Triarch Stalker is a bit of a stinker, though given its cost, I'm not sure you could take it and still fit in enough other models if you're setting a minimum model count.

You could also rule that due to Quantum Shielding, its armor total is 37, not 33, and so it can't be taken.

I think Necrons' only way to do that is with tomb blades, but that fulfills the requirements. And I could do that, the current rule up there is just to try to be inclusive instead of ruling in a way that tells people they can't bring models (even though the ruleset does that anyway). Just kinda the preference I'm running on right now, I'll probably discuss it with the store and my friends and see what might be best for the group. It may even be moot, I haven't run into a single Necrons player at this store yet.

Then again, I bought some skitarii for the first time specifically to play kill team with so others may do that too.
