using resin for rivers question

I tried my hand at making some modular rivers for my FLGS and i think they turned on not to bad...except for the ends. I used tape to try and seal off the ends. It worked "ok" in that i really didnt have any leaks but the tape didnt really hold a rigid flat shape so the ends of each module were uneven. They have also that "creeping" issue where the resin on the ends climbed up the tape ever so slightly. This made a sort of lip on each end.
My question is this: what should i use to seal the ends of the modules while the resin is poured/setting? Also and ideas of tidying up the ends of the first attempt modules without ruining them?

Re:using resin for rivers

No real solution for you, and I made my streams a long time ago (most have disapeared) I made mine using clear plastic (from action figure packagin) as the endcaps for each river...it had the same creeping issue you talked about. The only thing I have ever been able to adjust the resin with is my Dremmel tool's grinder head, and you can never really get it to polish back to perfectly clear. I started putting one of my "features" near the end of each river section so it somewhat masks the problem. You know, stepping stones, a foot bridge, a fallen log, rapids (made by teasing the resin as it is drying) anything like that. Again, not perfect as it can mean too many things for crossing etc. Wish I could help more. I wouldn't mind seeing yours, so I can get more ideas.

How did you attack the clear plastic to the end of the river sections? to keep the resin from leaking out around it. It seems to like to creep if you dont have a really good snug fit. even the tape wasnt tight enough with its natural adhesion.

using resin for rivers question

Hello. I made some resin rivers in some gaming tiles a little while ago. There were a few things I did to keep the edges pretty flat. First, the standard layer of masking tape down, then a chunk of thin cardboard taped down on the outside of that. To keep the cardboard from buckling or bending, I put some heavy textbooks up against it.

I still had a little resin leak out since I had more than a few layers of stuff put together. My sculpting clay might not make a great seal with plastic card, so I am going to put a layer of PVA over top of everything before the super thick paint I used to seal it up last time.

As for the creep up the side of the tape, you really cannot do much. A semi liquid is going to form a meniscus with its edges. The best you can do is ignore it or try to sand it away afterward.

Re:using resin for rivers question

Nanaki: I cut my strips of clear plastic to the right height, but long so they overlapped the edges of my river bed banks. I then used a product called Goop as a glue to attach them. I have a dremmel tool with a few nice grinding discs, so was able to sink the plastic strips a MM into the banks (which in my case were Balsawood shaved down. I think if your plastic is the thin type for most packaging you don't even have to countersink the edges.
For total explanation: (I realize I use the old miserable inch measurement system, so going to try and put metric in too, but none of these measurements is an absolute) I took a plank of basewood or plasticard 1/8" (2-3mm) thick as the base of each river section. I Made my river 6" wide, with each bank 1" or so (bank thickness varied, as rivers do). I then shaved/cut a piece of balsa wood from a pre-packed assortment I found at Hobby World to fit as the banks (It included a LOT of 1/8 by 1/4 strips I glued together then shaped). These were glued together using goop, but I'm sure any pva glue would work. I then cut up an old action figure package, keeping the portions of clear plastic that were straight and flat from the edges. These I cut to fit the ends of each section (my river ended up about 1/8-1/4" (4-6mm) deep in water effect). I painted my river bottom and added any objects (stones, logs, etc). Then I glued the strips to each end using Goop. Most of my river sections were about 6-8" long, some longer (I made a 12" section with a bridge). When I was done, I found the water effect had stuck to the plastic slats, so I left them in place. I admit, curved sections were harder to work with using the balsa wood, but the goop is a really thick rubbery filler, so mistakes in fitting were easily filled. In truth, straight sections of two feet with separate curves being smaller would have been wiser.
The ends that had formed a lip, I carefully ground down and did my best to polish. I did not paint over my water effect except where I teased rapids up (and I don't think it worked that well...) so can't help you on that side. My painting skills are slightly above average at best. Sadly, I lost most of that river in a move so have no pics, sorry.
My friend tried rivers with foam banks, and it was much harder because most glues etc ate the foam, and edges were impossible to keep sharp.
Hope this helps. I love making and playing on terrain so send every bit of encouragement I can! Nothing feels better than hearing someone say "Dude, nice battlefield!"
PS: Water effect does tend to run everywhere sadly...I did this fountain piece, and apparently the Imperial Engineer made a few mistakes...so suddenly the fountain became a broken down relic with puddles around it...

using resin for rivers question

Yeah, the creepy lip bit is just the meniscus.

You either shave it back when it's not fully hardened (cured) yet - but has stopped flowing. Or sand it back when it has. Can't really prevent it.
