Painting drop pods in utilitarian/non-legion specific colors

I currently run 2 HH armies: Death Guard and Blood Angels. I have a need for drop pods, but don't really want to spend the money or time to paint up a double set of pods, when one set will really do. 2 dread drop pods vs. 4 for example. I'm looking for some ideas about how to paint my pods a neutral color (grey/heat scaring) that could be used with either army.

I do think weathered grey would be your best bet. If you wanted to add some extra color, my first thought would be some hazard stripes on the edges/doors. Although that does invoke the imagery of some specific chapters.

Another thought for some detail instead of chapter badges on the door would be to stencil some numbers on the doors, or possibly a ship name.

Borrowing color schemes from the guard might be another source of inspiration. Generic imperial resources.

Yeah, I think in the HH setting, it's easier to justify a neutral color scheme as they feel more like expendable munitions in 30K vs. the revered war relics they are in 40K. Hazard stripe are already planned.

Re:Painting drop pods in utilitarian/non-legion specific colors

Another potential recommendation would be to paint the vessels a dusty tan or desert tan color scheme. This helps avoid them feeling too much like Iron Warriors, instead giving them a nice, disposable guard feel.

Hope this potentially helps!
