Just I have had bad results with the liquid fixer as it tends to pull everything Down to the nearest recess points which I dont want to do.

It sounds like you're trying to get an even coating of dust over a flat surface. In that case, mix some pigment with white spirit and apply over the surface. If it flows, you're using too much. You can also apply the pigment dry and dab a brush that's damp with white spirit near the pigments so that it gently flows through the pigments without actually moving them. I would also try the same effect with your fixer.

Google "apply pigment scale model" and you'll get tons of information including youtube videos. Find a tutorial that matches your desired outcome and do some experimenting.

It's also worth mentioning that your problem could be that you're trying to apply pigment over gloss varnish. Pigments can be applied directly on to paint or on top of matte & satin varnishes. Again, you'll need to experiment to see what works for your particular project.

It will be going into the Sand Down Model (Melbourne Australia) show next year, and there is rumours the Judges have a tendency to pick the model up where ever they like to asses it even if mounted on a Plinth.
