Necrons vs the wolves.

Hey dakka, I was needing some help against necrons with my puppies.

I usually don't have much trouble with my SW, I usually have enough shooty to cut a hole through the enemies defenses and leave them open to TWC or termies and what-have-you.

However, I cannot hurt necrons.

Everytime I face them it feels like throwing myself at a brick wall, they get the board control and I can't fight back and they take me out piece meal.

My opponent usually brings something like a chaiot, a handful of warriors, a ghost ark, night scythe, lychguard and the canopteck (however you spell it) harvest.

I can almost never find what I did wrong when I lose these games, if I lost against some tau I can tell why I lost, same for any other amy besides the 'crons.

Any help? Any amazing units? I can use as much help as I can get!

Thank you!
~Mikey

I only have 3 TWC (I gonna be picking more up soon), but I did have a deepstriking Wulfen murderpack with a wyrdstorm brotherhood support.

Even the wulfen were completely stopped in their tracks, mainly by the wraiths which tied a unit up for 3 turns.

Necrons vs the wolves.

seems to me that wolves against necrons you have a couple of units that could be put to good if situational use.

Jaws of the world wolf - fishing for psychic powers is hit or miss, but this power seems like it would be amazing vs necrons I2. Useful for sniping wraiths before they can get to something valuable

Wulfen - These guys are so broken it's hilarious, also they solve one of the biggest problems of getting into close combat with necrons

blood claws - already cheap and okay, combine with wulfen to bring them up to amazing

longfangs or landspeeders with heavy bolters - 36" puts you out of range in getting shot back at and AP4 eliminates at least one save that necron warriors get. not amazing but cheap so you can spam them to make them effective

skyclaws - cheap close combat units that just might sweeping advance a much more expensive unit.

Rhinos - yes necrons will chew through any armor, but throw enough cheap armor at them and at least force them to spend a turn or two chewing through rhinos while you get into position for a turn 3 charge

yes most of these are close combat units for a shooty edition, but necrons are the kings of the shooting phase so trying to out dakka necrons is a difficult prospect

You're going to lose some of your CC units to Wraiths in the form of endless tarpit. Especially ones that rely on low AP to be effective. Plan accordingly.

Necron dakka is that horrifying, but it is persistent. Overload CC against normal Necrons to try to cause enough damage to sweep them.

Those seem clever, I already make use of a lot of skyclaws so Im glad to hear those wont be hard to fit into a list.

The landspeeders are an interesting option, simply out of virtue of them seeming not-so-good.

Thanks!
~Mikey

Because the best way to kill Necrons is to focus them down one unit at a time.
...
However, if your goal is to KILL Necrons, you're probably not going to have a good time.
You're better off trying to out play them.
If your opponent is taking a Decurion he will completely lack ObSec. Being the case, if you go anywhere near an objective with YOUR ObSec units, he won't be able to do anything about it apart from try to kill you off of it.
But here's the thing: Necrons are not that killy. As I said above, the main strength of the army is its hard to kill-ness. Their killy-ness is only moderate. SW definitely top them in murder ability.
AND, another tactic I don't see people employ enough is trying to engage their shooters immediately. "Oh, I won't be able to wipe out that unit of Warriors so I'm not even going to bother." WTF are you doing?! Warriors are garbage at combat but decent at shooting. By leaving them unengaged you're letting your opponent use them exactly how they want! You want to tie them so they're not shooting. This goes for all their shooty guys (except Praetorians. Don't rush into combat with them. They're blenders).

My opponent usually brings something like a chaiot, a handful of warriors, a ghost ark, night scythe, lychguard and the canopteck (however you spell it) harvest.

Luckily, apart from the Canoptek Harvest, those are all meh choices. Not utter garbage, but definitely not best stuff in the codex.
My recommendation would be to:
- engage the Warriors ASAP (goal is not necessarily to kill, just tie up so they can't shoot).
- rush something fast and disposable up to catch the Wraiths before they can catch your TWC and tarpit them.
- avoid the Lychguard (they're slow and can't shoot, not really worth worrying about).
- always shoot at the vehicles. New FAQ significantly reduced their effectiveness when jinking, so try to get them to jink as much as possible.
- Chariot is a distraction. Do not shoot at it, that would be a waste. If anything has a powerfist or melta bomb or something, try to catch it in CC so you can explode it.

Necrons vs the wolves.

First, as others have suggested, don't throw your best melee units at the wraiths, they are just like your TC but with yet another save. Besides the wraiths they are slow so outplay and out maneuver them for objectives. And when in doubt charge their shooty stuff. They may not die but they suck at CC, you can hold them off. Good luck fighting the robots!
