Dark elder help!

So got my hands on a bunch of dark elder for cheap and I have a bunch of units I'm not sure I should keep or sell off for better units.

I have 35 wyches, 15 hellions, 10 incubi and 5 wrecks that I'm thinking about selling and I think I can get about 200 bucks for them. but before selling I'm wondering if I should keep them or just sell them off for better units. I currently have 1 raider, 6 jet bikes, 1 ravager, 1 venom, 5 wracks, 1 jet fighter, 5 incubi, a Succubus and 20 warriors. I'm planning on buying a start collecting dark elder box and I would like to know if I should buy a second box or get other units to accompany what I already have? Out of the units I am planning on selling is there anything worth keeping and out of the stuff I want to keep is there anything Not worth keeping?

Any advice is much appreciated, thanks!

Out of the units I am planning on selling is there anything worth keeping and out of the stuff I want to keep is there anything Not worth keeping?

Any advice is much appreciated, thanks!

Sell the hellions. Wyches more than likely sell, wracks might be ok but the rest seems fairly decent. I've been learning flyers for dark eldar don't do enough for their points. Even the void raven's bomb misses a lot and it's the only str 9 ap 2 large template we've got and we have no large str 8 large blasts (just the small blast ones on the void raven).

Can't say how to best play them but after about 12 games this is what i've found. Incubi do fairly well and make their points back. Generally vs storm shields and tough stuff they let up a bit (esp. those freaking storm shields) but normally the mutually destroy terminators mixed in with stormshields.

Keep most of your force on the board so no reserves rolls needed.

As others have said use haywire and heat lances to destroy tanks. Heat lance scourge are good when deep striked in with an hq to get them their but they're one of the only things i'd do this with.

In general my answer for fighting against units in cover or just hordes is melee. Even if you strike last the units that tend to dig behind cover tend to not be very good melee combatants so incubi, grotesques and even scourge that charge with their fairly swift movement might do it esp. since scourge come auto with grenades. Dunno what to say about reavers but others have had good luck with them. I upped myself to 2 squads of 6 each for a total of 12 and recently re-configured them to all heat lance away from all blasters. Reason being vehicle spam in my games is one of the bigger issues i face. It can be rather hard on me.

Oh and generally don't run a 2nd HQ for as long as you can help it as they eat point really hard. They're more of a delivery system most of the time with some boosts. You only take the first because you have to but a few extra points for some heat lance scourge pinpoint deepstriking is pretty good and almost always sets a vehicle blowing up sky high.

Jancoran wrote:
Id keep the incubi, thats for sure.

Get at least 8 grotesques and then a Haemonculous. Thank me later.

As he says incubi are decent to great depending on if the enemy has power weapons, instant death power weapons or storm shields. If it's thunder hammer/storm shield combo your incubi would be in a rough time and usually you should just spam poisoned shots at those ones till they go down and then your disintegrator cannons can mop up the 5+ inv. save guys instead. Usually i see them do ok but in one game vs guard i basically took out a whole vet squad with 5 and then ran over and killed 20-25 guardsmen. I'm not sure if they died or ran off the table but it's the same to me. Only one of the 5 incubi died during that whole fight and they lasted longer than anything on the board which was fairly surprising to me. Given his gear i'd imagine that's because he didn't have the right stuff to kill em.

If i took grotesques outside of the covens book (heresy i know) i'd run 4 grotesques in a raider with a succubus wielding an archite glaive. She kills the heavily armored dudes and the grotesques handle the rest and meat shield the enemy with a giant hulking wall of meat. If i used them with the raider i'd just flat out to something juicy and jink in the enemy's turn when they start shooting it.

Yes the Grotesquerie Formation is money. I stuff two units of 4 Grotesques in Raiders, add Enhanced Aethersails and Dark Lance (because my army seriously needs them given how much melee i have) and then the haemonculous goes with one of them (Urien is a better choice given his aura, but points).

The Abberations are armed with Agonizers.

This is an absolutely excellent way to make people sad. very very sad.

I cannot say enough good things aboutthem really. And they just get tougher and tougher.

Start them at about 42.1 inches from the enemy when going second if they have 36" range weapons. Preferably in cover. Use Strategic Warlord Traits at all times. shoot for Night fighting so you can get those sweet sweet 3+ cover saves. Lurk

On your turn, move 36" forward. with everything. Lurk.

After the enemy is done killing Raiders, massive assault.

Now this works for me because i have an army of Beast masters (useful for Null deploying because its nigh impossible for enemies to get through that many wounds in turn one) and they are fast fast fast as reserves (and their number of wounds serves them well when coming from reserve and weathering the volleys leveled against them).

i use the Court of the Archion. I use the Incubi. So it is an all out assault force that is l;lightning fast and all about the blood orgies. Meanwhile my obsec is lazily picking up objective points behind them while the shooting gets all tied up and dead like.

I also use the Voidraven bomber and a couple Ravagers. the only dedicated shooting in the list are these three, and it's enough to worry people without over spending. the Void Raven is expensive but wow does it do work. I personally would want to be elsewhere when that thing gets you in its sights. it is a highly effective killer and can potentially kill two units the round it shows up, and certainly can take one out. Just point, click and delete, just about.

I really enjoy my Dark Menagerie type list. just monstrous ghoulish THINGS everywhere.

=)

Hellions are terrible, Im sorry, but they really really are.

Wyches (IMHO) are not to be underestimated, they are a great tarpit unit and honestly look really cool so theres that , but honestly, from my experience they aren't good but they aren't THAT bad.

reavers are amazing, they will crack light armour, light to medium infantry and everything in between.

I like a mix of raiders and venoms, raiders go forward a insane amount in a single turn and force the enemy to deal with them, while the venoms can hang back and pepper the infantry and MC's with splinter fire. Raiders are useful for a super fast moving frontline (and I mean right in the front of the enemy) and venoms are good to hang back.

Haemonculus covens are amazing, like a lot better than everything else in the book, they hit hard, they're tough, and they look fething awesome.

DE in general are a challenge, you have almost no survivability, and you don't have any shenanigans, they are 40k on hard mode.

Keep in mind, I haven't played DE in about a year and I'm just beginning to rebuild my army so take what I say with a grain of salt

Have fun with the denizens of Commoragh, they are absolutely a blast!
~Mikey

They're a great unit, but I find I rarely want to run more than 1 unit but stick 4 of them with a Succubus using the Archite Glaive in a Venom and watch your opponent cower in fear as they tear through everything short of Lychguard w/shields and Hammernaters. It might be worth keeping the Wracks, you already have 1 unit of Wracks and if you get a second Venom (and you'll find you need lots of Venoms for a DE army) you can run the Scalpel Squadron, a Formation that automatically Deep Strikes on turn 1 and can get D3 VP's for First Blood. Not a great formation but probably the best way to run Wracks.

And yes, get the start collecting set.
