so I realize that in my efforts to get an HH imperial fist army all together, I now have all I need for the Siege assault vanguard list written by Forgeworld! IT's something I wanted to do since I started this hobby and you can probably find old threads of mine drooling and obsessing over it on Dakka.

What I wanna know now is that if it's still viable in today's modern 40k, or is there better in the base books that I'm ignoring because I'm too focused on trying to fit Breacher marines into every single list?

BTW, this list is free on FW website (somewhere) https://www.forgeworld.co.uk/resources/fw_site/fw_pdfs/Warhammer_40000/Siege_Assault_Vanguard_Army_List_Update.pdf

Am I missing something or is it just Codex space marines with good, but expensive foot slogging tacticals, dreadnoughts and a unique IC? the 1d4chan thread talks about how it has a ton of firepower, but honestly I am not seeing it.
I've played it acouple of times. Its a very a elite list heavy and takes some skill to play. When I built my list for it, I took 2 siege masters (1 for tank hunter and 1 for monster hunter, or double down on either 1.) The siege mantle upgrade can be awesome. The marines become bulky, but you get to re-roll 3+ and its free to any IC that joins the squad. (re-roll 2+ anyone) Being able to take dreadnoughts and centurions as troops is awesome, but you have to remember you can not have more of them then you have tactical marines.

Securing that siege marker can be a challenge if you just use the siege list. That is why I suggest taking a formation or two from the Angles of death book or codex space marine to supplement the army and make it so you can get that objective easier.

Re:Seige Assault Vanguard list in modern 7th edition

I would say the SAV list is not as competitive compared to vanilla SM because of Formation shenanigans, though it does come with its own perks.. Having access to re-rollable 3+, 4 HS slots in a single CAD and the buffs granted by the Siege Master makes it a very potent list, and to be fair the most important things you're giving up, the Drop Pod and Jump Packs, can easily be added back into the list through formations suchas the Skyhammer Annihilation Formation or allies. I would say run the SAV over vanilla SM for flavour reasons first and foremost, for fluffy armies like the Imperial Fists to take adantage of your tougher Tacticals to shoot infantry, while your HS choices blast their vehicles and monsters into oblivion when given MonsterTank Hunter by your Siege Master. Despite the theoratical threat of AP3 guns being everywhere, you have to remember that every AP3/2 shot fired at your Tactical blob, who most of the time will get a 5+ cover anyway unless you're BAWLD AND FEWLISH, is a shot not fired at your Dreads/Tanks/Terminators.

The Siege Objective is a real pain in the ass no doubt, especially in Maelstrom missions and the like. This is what prevents the SAV list from being played competitively (in addition to it being a FW thing). The list is still credibly flavourful and will make for great narrative games. After all, spendin five turns throwing men into the grinder to secure a siege objective, only to cap in the final turn with a lone Tactical Marine, makes for a much better story than having your guys run arounthe battlefield standing near random points of importance for 5 turns. Play if you already have a viable SM army since you just need to shuffle the FOC around a bit.

Re:Seige Assault Vanguard list in modern 7th edition

You made two errors on your sample army list. The troops choice Siege Dreadnought Talon entry is for a Talon of three, not 1-3. You only included one dreadnought. Second, the siege drill has an in-built heavy flamer, not power fist.

"Unit Composition •
Three Dreadnoughts, which must be of either Ironclad or Siege pattern in any combination. Ironclad Dreadnoughts are 135 points each and Siege Dreadnoughts are 120 points each."

This list predates Tempest and Retribution, so if you were my opponent, I would allow you to substitute a single Leviathan into one of your Siege Talons (one per army, not one per talon) at the points cost in the Relic Leviathan entry or have a single Leviathan as a HS choice.
https://www.forgeworld.co.uk/resources/PDF/Datasheets/LeviathanSiegeDreadnoughtRules.pdf

and I would allow a single Relic Deredeo as a HS choice.
https://www.forgeworld.co.uk/resources/fw_site/fw_pdfs/Warhammer_40000/Deredeo_Pattern_Dreadnought_V2.pdf

As a modeling option It might be fun to give the Dreads gunshields or arm shields to represent Extra Armor

J
