Looking for advice on expanding a Space Marine army

Hi everyone,

(caveat: I'm a massive 40K newb - haven't played since 6th, and even then was only a couple of times. So I don't know the rules or "what I want the army to do", per se) I'm also more hobbyist than gamer.

That said, I'd like to build a viable force!

I recently came into possession of a good sized Ultramarines army and want to expand on it.

So far it has (note: I realize some of these choices, like the basic land raider, aren't considered very good but I'm fine with that).

Land Raider, lascannons, multimelta
Predator with 4 lascannons
Rhino x 2
Razorback with lascannon
5 veterans (old school models - like very old - I can't really tell what they are supposed to be. looks like they have a flamer and bolters)
10 man tac squad
10 man devastator squad with missile launchers
10 man scout squad, mixed weapons
10 terminators - looks like a regular type squad - missile launcher (I forget the name, on his back lol), assault cannon.
Command squad with apothecary, champions
Dreadnought with multi-melta and fist
Special chars: Telion, Chronus
Captain

What I have already on hand to add
4 bikes, one grav gun
1 attack bike
1 land speeder with MM
Sicarious
Plastic librarian in power armor
Storm Talon
Stalker
5 assault marines, 2 flamers 1 eviscerator 1 grav pistol, jump packs

I like plastic kits more than individual metal models/characters or finecast (which is why I'm hesitant to get a Thunderfire for example)

Any thoughts on other kids to add (maybe Sternguard?) to have a well-rounded force to choose lists from? I'm guessing a drop pod is probably a must....I hate assembling those lol

I'd love any and all advice.

I would look into formations. They are a good guide on how to collect viable armies these days. The old style still works, however.

You could probably use another tac squad or two. A lot of formations are based on 3 squads of them. You might be able to get by poaching some bodies from the dev squad, and splitting the one you have in half.

Dop pods are good. Your dread wants one, and if you get sternguard, they will as well. If you want to add pods to your list, I’d recommend 1 or 3 to start. Odd numbers are useful on the table.

A dev box would give you more options for heavy weapons.

Sternguard are quite good.

Your LR could use a good choppy squad to drag around. Honor guard, assault termis, or even a tricked out command squad. But something mean and blendery.

Land Speeder Storms are quite nice for any non-sniper scout squad.

A jump chaplain to go with your assault marines.
A bike captain to go with your bikes.

Yes, look at formations.
I see at least 3 drop pods in your future.
A couple more Librarians for another formation.
Maybe 3 Centurions as well.
Good all around force.
The getting started marines army kit would work well.
Good luck!
