Warhammer 40k 8th edition - what could it bring?

So my brother and I were having a discussion the other day about how the game is so unbalanced to what it used to be and how certain armies are in a dire need of new rules to catch up, I mentioned I found it a bit weird that chaos were getting a legion suppliment instead of a thousand sons codex and releasing the rest later which has made me think what if 8th edition does away with codexes, the 8th edition rule book could include your usual units that are found in codexes and then if you want to do a sub faction specific style army you buy a suppliment and whatever specific units are released with it. This might mean a price hike on the BRB as it'll be a lot bigger but it also means GW can release smaller books with a few extra kits specific to the book (like plastic eldar rangers with an alaitoc suppliment or aspect warriors with biel tan).
I know the first argument against this would be GW losing money on annual codex sales but I think it would be a great way to bring the game back some balance and release kits that people have wanted for a long time but they never got round to doing (I've used eldar as an example btw as I'm an eldar player but this could work across all armies).
What do you guys think to this and what do you think 8th could bring?

I would rather have data slates for all the units and a small book let for army special rules. I'm really hoping they don't do a book for every legion, cause that would be an incredibly large amount of books, even more so than SM armies. I'm hoping 8th slims down tons of rule bloat by actually doing the data slate stuff

Warhammer 40k 8th edition - what could it bring?

I really hope they streamline the game because the problem with current 40k is how there's a lot of emphasis on individual models when it wants to be a massive battle game. You can't have both without bogging the game down which is why it upwards of 3 hours to play a standard sized game. I would love to see them put more emphasis on viewing whole units as a single entity rather than treating a unit as a group of models.

Maybe go as far as Kings of War and make it so that you never remove wounded models, but each wound is a -1 modifier to your leadership value. If you fail your morale check, the unit is routed and destroyed. Of course, you'd have to rescale the leadership values somehow based on the squad sizes.

Puppies, lollipops, rainbows, and unicorns!

I hope, because that's what it needs to bring me back.

Nah, really just waiting to see. I hope it streamlines and gets rid of the bloat with special snowflake rules and has data cards instead of full armybooks.

Warhammer 40k 8th edition - what could it bring?

The biggest thing I hop 8th edition takes from AoS is freely available war scrolls for units. They can still do Codexes or something similar(they've got a ton of books for AoS) that has all the fluff and maybe special formations or what ever, but don't make them part of the mandatory point of entry. The upfront cost of books is what's really turned me off to 40k for a long time(did finally but a Tau Codex). Despite all the issues with AoS, the one thing GW has done right is lower the barrier for entry.

Automatically Appended Next Post:

Formosa wrote:
i want 2 games from 8th, sub 2k and above 2k, above I want more streamlined battles, larger scale, below I like the complexity we have now, but would still be happy with a bit of streamlining.

I'd like to see something like Kill Team enshrined in the core rulebook as the low points way to play too. 3 tiers of battle in the core rule book.

Warhammer 40k 8th edition - what could it bring?

I've floated this idea around at my local GW and a few people agree with me: there will no longer be templates or blast markers.

Why do I think this? The newest dice boxes don't have a scatter die. Yeah you can buy them on their own but I believe that is part of the change over to 8th. If any of the supposed rumors prove true 8th is going to slim down the game rules. Eliminating Templates and Blasts would be an easy cut seeing as AoS doesn't use them
