1,850pt Video Battle Report - Genestealer Cult & Tyranids Vs Dark Angels

It's cold up here in Alaska! -2 Degrees F this morning! But nothing warms up the soul like a brand-new Glacial Geek Battle Report! https://youtu.be/10CbmbpxrmQ This week my Dark Angels take on the Genestealer Cult and Tyranids! The Dark Angels are dispatched to a distant Imperial planet that had succumbed to an Ork infestation. The Sons of the Lion arrived expecting to deal with the xenos threat and cleanse the planet for the Emperor. What they found was far from what they expected. Over the time that the Orks had been on the planet, a Genestealer Cult had managed to infest the civilization and had called out to their Multi-Armed Gods. The Unforgiven were now faced with an entirely different foe, that of a Genestealer Cult in full revolt and a newly arrived Hive Fleet. Will the might of the First Legion be enough to cleanse the planet of the Cult presence, or will the Hive Mind be too much for them to handle? Watch and find out!

Looks like you had better luck against the Genestealer Cult than I did at the last tournament (which was my first time facing it, and with Dark Angels no less). That ability to assault on turn 1 is huge for them, especially with units like Purestrains that hit at high Initiative. With 5 Flyrants paired up with it, it just becomes more than many lists can deal with. I have a feeling that many GT lists will be some mix of Flyrants and GSC, as having many FMCs on the board and being able to infiltrate and assault really well with the Cult guys will force some really tough firing decisions.

It was also very informative to see someone running a DA battle company list, as I'm trying to put one of those together myself. I'm just trying to round up a few transports and then I'll be good to go with that. That full BS overwatch is pretty clutch, as it's like DA get a second shooting phase if they get charged.

1,850pt Video Battle Report - Genestealer Cult & Tyranids Vs Dark Angels

Thanks for the batrep: got a question for you though, why did the GSC player hold all of his units still during turn 1? He could have made those charges a lot easier on himself, as failing two charges is not good. Additionally, why take the flyrant off the board turn 1? He easily could have gotten it in the fight as far as I can tell.

1,850pt Video Battle Report - Genestealer Cult & Tyranids Vs Dark Angels

It is due to the interpretation of the cult ambush table. It says they cannot move the turn they deploy or arrive from reserves.

I don't think this is how it should be played however. They didn't deploy or arrive from reserve turn 1 so I don't think it would count. I think the "deploy" wording is there because of psychic summoning. If it just said "may not move after arriving from reserves" then summoned units could be placed and THEN move. Which would be a little silly.

Also, holy cow, 5 6's on 7 units? Did I understand that right? So far I've had just rotten luck with it. My last tournament I rolled 26 dice without a single 6. Another turn I rolled 30 and got 2. Where do I go to learn how to roll better?

@ZergSmasher Yeah it's a BRUTAL combination! This was the first time I faced them myself and I was VERY impressed! They're gonna be a pain to deal with!

@Jifel Yeah like vercingatorix said we read the Cult Ambush rule as stating that they couldn't move the turn they came in. We've since talked about it and we also agree that that rule is in effect for the times they come in from reserves or ongoing reserves as opposed to when they're deployed with Infiltrate.

@vercingatorix Yeah upon further discussion and reading I think you're right ... I think we just saw "Can't Move" and didn't really parse it any further ... And yeah, he made a STUPID number of 6s on the Cult Ambush rolls! To be fair he was running the Subterranean Assault formation so that meant he could roll 2 dice instead of 1, but it was still impressive!
