Is the Phantom Titan's Power Glaive Worth It?

For those who have experience with the bigger weapons of war of the Craftworld Eldar, I have a question to ask: Is the Phantom Titan worth outfitting with its CCW or leaving it as a fire support platform? I only ask as the idea of something that size hacking foes apart in battle is certainly entertaining, but if it would make the model less effective it would be better to know now than after a few games. If it is not, then would the Vampire Hunter be a potentially better vehicle for anti-Titan or anti-Super Heavy duties?

This is a tricky question. If the opponent has multiple superheavies (Especially walkers) and you can reasonably reach them by turn 2, then yes, it is viable. Other than that, stick with fire support.

What about equally large Titans or even bigger scale super heavies, such as Reavers or Warlords, would it potentially be worth considering using against them?

Is the Phantom Titan's Power Glaive Worth It?

In my experience, usually they do GREAT against Reavers. With the new Warlord's rules, they might not do so great there. Here's the deal, against reavers, you go first, with a higher weapon skill. The Reaver also doesn't get a save, you do. You should be able to either gut it or kill it outright while taking minimal damage in return.

The problem is, can you get in that close? If the enemy is smart they will bubble wrap the thing with tanks. You'll need something else to bulldoze them out of the way first. (Mass basilisk fire, a few D-strength blasts, etc.

Unlike other titans the Phantom can still use it's Titan close combat weapon against non superheavies.

Don't forget that with the new rules even superheavies need to snapfire if it causes a glance or pen. So even baneblades and other big guns will be useless if they survive!

Thank you indeed then, that is most helpful. Given I know one player at my local store has a Reaver and a relatively large number of Imperial Knights, this ought to help even the odds at the next Apocalypse event.

Is the Phantom Titan's Power Glaive Worth It?

Whilst the Glaive can work, the general scale of Apocalypse tables means you'l probably be better off running it with 2 Phantom Pulsars, 8 Strength D 7" blasts could very easily take out a Reaver Titan turn 1.

Re:Is the Phantom Titan's Power Glaive Worth It?

That was tempting were it not for two factors - Most of the Imperial Knights brought into these games tend to be close combat orientated, which is a disadvantage to my own equally melee focused army. With luck, if they try to run in I could use the Phantom to drag a few into melee if not destroying them, and if they don't that means their main advantage will be nullified and they can be picked off at range by other units. The other reason is, well, personal appeal more than anything else really. The idea of something that large armed with a melee weapon just seems far more entertaining than another gun platform, and it would be more fun to work on as a centerpiece. So long as the Glaive isn't an utterly useless throw-away weapon and can be used against those vehicles, that would be fine. Still, thank you for the suggestion.

I don't have it yet, but it would be the Forgeworld model. While I personally do like the Armorcast design far more, and the vastly more alien aesthetics of the head and fins, the legs on the 40,000 scale model look off somehow and certain detailed aspects do appear much cruder by comparison.

Most of these sorts of games would be played inside a Games Workshop store, and they do tend to take a somewhat dim view of those older models.

Though, if you have worked on both, may I ask what kind of metal wiring you would advise for pinning together models of that scale? I imagine the usual paperclips would likely be insufficient for the task.

For the armorcast model, just high strength epoxy will get you through. I recommend JB Weld.

As for the Forge World Titan, I also suggest JB Weld there too. I used very small screws for the hits and waist, and paper clips in a few other places. Rock solid.
