New army - Advice required!

Dear Dakka community!

I have been in and out of the hobby for about 16 years now, mainly Modelling and painting as I found it to be a great past time and an escape from the stresses of daily life. I have painted many different army's on my time and read a lot of the Horus heresy series, gaunts ghost and Eisenhorn series so am a big fan of the fluff too, but I've only ever played one or two games. This is mainly due to not having a crowd of mates that play the game, meaning I have to go to my local store to play which is.. awkward for me at times.

Nevertheless, I dont see the point in me painting any more armies that will sit on my shelf and be sold with no one ever seeing them, so the time has come to start fresh with a new army that I've never done before.

My requirements are - A "fun" army to play that stands a chance, but is not over powered or over played.
-- fun to model and paint (I know this is personal preference but I'd like opinions)
-- I don't mind horde army's but after painting skaven clan rats before AoS, I find repetitious painting a grind and not that rewarding.
-- can field a list that doesn't require me to spend thousands.

I'm leaning towards Dark Eldar, Orks or Chaos, But after looking through the "start collecting" ranges it's hard for me to decide how I'd build any of those 3.

I've got the rulebook already and some chaos cultists that I was thinking of nurgling up, but I have about 150 GBP to throw down now, and more on subsequent paydays. I don't need to rush these things and enjoy taking my time, so any advice is greatly appreciated.
Many thanks

CJ

What's this? Someone I can corrupt to the forces of chaos?

Hello my friend! Welcome to Dakka!
My immediate suggestion to you is the forces of Chaos:
-Not overpowered, at all.
-With Traitor Legions they become far more competitive and can now play with all the big boys without getting curb stomped.
-Some lists require hordes but those are only with Cultist spam lists, there are a lot of small elite armies for chaos that include bikes, termies, melta/plasma filled rhinos, etc.
-The best thing about chaos; the modeling and painting opertunities! Everything from clean uncluttered renegades to wildly mutated marines, from sensibly painted Black legion to wild and bright colours of the Emperor's children.

Orks are very horde like: everything in their army is so cheap you have to take several hundred of them.
Dark Eldar are pretty nice looking and they are small model count armies but come on: their just closet chaos Eldar (too scared of big Slaanesh eating your soul to truely dedicate yourself to chaos).

If you do decide to choose chaos you will next have to choose your warband from a wide variety, let us know if you have accepted Chaos completely.

Chaos can be incredibly powerful (Daemon-factory or certain Daemon deathstars), incredibly terrible (pure CSM book), or anywhere in between; it runs through a pretty massive spectrum.

Found a post I made a month and a half ago rating armies by n00b-friendliness: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/708556.page#9026794. I don't know if Traitor Legions has pushed CSM that much further up my list, though they are certainly better than they were; Imperial Agents certainly hasn't changed anything.

As to your 'main' requirements you won't usually hit those by Codex pick, you'll hit them by what army you build within the Codex. If you let us know what 'fun to model and paint' entails and/or some details about how you like to play (e.g. I like wizards, creative combos, and a high destructive-power-per-model ratio so I've ended up with the Inquisition and the Eldar) we can probably be more helpful.

some nice responses here and some great food for thought. my thanks for the reply's so far. I'm definitely going to go away and look at CSM in some more depth!

To answer Rakes question - Its difficult for me to say how i enjoy playing as i do not have much experience, however i can say that - from lore and my own imagination, i always found the codex art and fluff of the great close quarters fighting to be most appealing.. i am more drawn to the Close combat than the big guns.

as far as painting goes, id like something less mind numbing than Necrons silver and wash, but maybe not super complex stuff i see floating around as i'm still learning to paint in layers and such and i dont want it to look Naff, as it really demoralises me when things turn out crap despite my best efforts..

again, many thanks for the replys, -- if anyone might suggest a good starting point with either CSM or DE (in terms of purchase) it would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers -

CJ

Slowly build up an army that lools cool and play some games with it, if a model/unit isn't performing then put it up for display/only use it in casual games, if your army needs a unit to support it then buy in a unit. But always make sure the core of your army is made up of models you love.

Out of the 3 you mentioned? Chaos and Orks. They provide some of the most room to wiggle for modeling and painting shenanigans, Orks in particular give you a ton of fun converting options.

If you like assault, Orks are certainly very choppy. DE are the opposite - DE shooting is king, and the assault units leave much to be desired. I can't speak to Chaos.

A good starting point for DE is the Start Collecting box. All of the units can be used in a solid list. After that, get more warriors, some Venoms, and a unit of Scourge.

You're better off just picking the army you're most in favor of aesthetically or from the background and just trying to build that way. You've chosen 3 duds when it comes to rules so winning will be an uphill battle for each unless you use very specific builds.

For Chaos, you need to familiarize yourself with the background more and determine if a specific god or legion calls you. You can still make a powerful short range (not necessarily melee) Thousand Sons force with a lot of spawns, brutes, and fiends for example. But the other gods will do better at the melee thing (and being CSM in general).

Dark Eldar have some pretty tough stuff if you want to play with the Haemonculi cult models, but if you're more a fan of the Kabalite stuff you're going to be stuck playing Dark Eldar the way they've been played since 3rd: Everything mounted and everything shooting.

Ork: These guys really need an overhaul. Their models are great. The background is fun. The aesthetic is awesome. Their rules just haven't been kept up so a lot lean toward biker lists.

These lists I've mentioned are hardly the only options available to you, but they're the best chance you'll get and even with it these armies are ranked at the bottom of the barrel. On the plus side, they're all probably the most likely to get rules updates as I think they each have the oldest books now?

As far as painting goes, Chaos is one of the more difficult armies to paint. Despite being Space Marines, a lot of the models have small details that can be quite a pain. Dark Eldar will give you a little more variety than Necron, but you'll find it's very similar with 1 or 2 colors than some washes. The vehicles are also very large flat surfaces. Orks are in between. A lot of green, but still with some armor to break things up plus it's fun to add some warpaint highlights to them.
