What foam do I use for large terrain pieces that cost effective?

I am looking to mark some large dioramas, mountains, and need to find a cheap foam for volume.

Is there a thread that people have seen floating around? The search brought up nothing specific to types of foam

It can melt somewhat when paint is applied, due to the need to be a rocky mountain.

I'm not sure what your definition of cost-effective is, but generally people use insulation foam (pink or blue - Home Depot or Lowes) generally available in 1"-2" thicknesses depending on where you live.

Colorado you'll be able to find 2" thickness, either labeled Pink Panther (pink) or DOW (blue). Normally comes in 8x4 sheets.

Do you mean XPS foam board? It's cheaper if you buy it in full sheets, 4' x 8'. Home depot has 1" thick sheets for $20, and 2" thick sheet for $26. I think you can get the blue foam board from Lowes, which I hear is more dense.

Here's an older thread on Dakka discussing it:
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/387613.page

Does that help?
