Not sure I understand allies etc..

Hello!

I have recently started looking into a chaos space marine and daemons army (I've never actually played a game of warhammer before... I used to just like painting!). However I'm really confused as to what I can take as chaos.. I love the idea of nurgle chaos but at the same time I love the look of the tzeentch models. Is it possible to have both in the same army? Would I be able to add daemons into that somehow? Any help would be great!

Any help would be great!

Are you familiar with how real life armies structure their units? If you think about it in that sense, it makes a lot more sense.

Imagine, if you will, Chaos is the British Military as a whole. Chaos Space Marines are the British Army, and Chaos Daemons are the Royal Marines. They have their own units, their own structures, their own equipment. They work together toward the same goal. However, Marine can never be a part of an Army unit (A CSM cant belong to a Daemon formation).

Within the British Army, you have different units (the Legons for Warhammer). Now, once again, a member of the 7th Armoured Division cant be a member of the 11th Armoured Division (Death Guard cant also be Word Bearers). They have to have their own formations (Combined Arms Detachment, Chaos Warband, etc) Now, within the 11th Armouerd and 7th Armoured, you will most likely have the same basic jobs. Some will be infantry, mechanics, cooks (Chaos Space Marines, Cultists, Sorcerors) and even the same equipment like tanks, helicopters (Forgefiends, Heldrakes). They're all part of the same overall army, but they ave their own specific units.

TL;DR each subfaction of Chaos may have the same models, but each different subfaction must have a different governing detachment. You may mix and match formations, assuming they're independent formations.

Riiiight yes I guess that makes sense!

So looking at the list someone posted on here earlier:

Allied detachment: Thousand sons (grants +1 invul under blessings, but can only use Tzeentch units)
HQ1 Chaos Sorcerer with mark of Tzeentch
T1 5 Rubrics

Allied detachment: Death guard (death guard bonuses like FnP + Relentless, but only Nurgle units)
HQ1 Typhus
T1 5 CSM mark of Nurgle

Combined arms detachment: Chaos Daemons
HQ1 Great Unclean One [Warlord]
T1 10 Plaguebearers
T2 10 Horrors

That is a completely viable list that would net me my favourite models?

Now, remember, Allied Detachments must have a different faction than the CAD. So long as you keep the CAD Daemons this is legal!

yeah that list is legal.

In addition because Typhus is a nurgle lord you could actually call your nurgle CSM "Plague Marines" (costs more points but you get to take 2 special weapons with 5 marines and plague knives)
